I'm looking at the coretac clamp on muzzle brake. Just wondering if there is any dissadvantage with the clamp on brakes compared to getting the barrel threaded for a threaded brake. Any info is appreciated.

Thanks
Travis

thread on is ALWAYS better, u want the centerline of the brake in perfect center line of the bore, if not gas exists differently perside and can effect accuracy, of your bore isnt exactly center of your barrel, or the machineing of the brake is off this can happen..

do they work? yes the quality of todays factory rifles and aftermarket brakes is pretty damn good.

are they they best option? no, a properly threaded and clocked brake is always better

IF the brake aligns coaxially with the bore, clamp-on should work just fine.
Coretac is serious about the goods he sells.

ideally, for a clamp on, you want to machine the barrel so that it is perfectly concentric with the bore THEN have the brake sized for a firm fit.

Blowing the brake off into the weeds is a possibility.

So you make the brake tight.. that can cause the bore to restrict which is not great for the bullet.

Another route is to put a groove around the barrel so that a cross bolt can be used in the brake to act as a recoil lug. Less clamping pressure might be possible.

With all this machining, why not just thread and be done with it.

They are not ideal but can be made to work...

great info thanks! I have my gun at a smith waiting for a new barrel maybe ill just get him to thread it for a brake right away. Do you experience any point of impact changes when taking the brake on and off? And do you need to work up two different loads? One with a brake and one without. Or maybe it would all depend on the rifle.

Thanks

you should see no shift in POI with brake on or off, and unless you have some MONSTEROUS brake out front, you will be fine with the same load, most precission / target barrels are stiff enought that the brake doesnt effect the harmonics

I installed a Roedale clamp-on on my rig, and it's working perfectly. Didn't want to bother with getting this barrel threaded, as in another year it'll be getting replaced anyways. It's probably not the ideal long term solution, nor was it very cheap, but it was simple and convenient enough for now.

Here's mine, screw-on type, on my Tikka T3 Sporter. Top quality, and it works very well... just don't piss-off your neighbours at the range! :)
Coretac doesn't sell junk, and their prices reflect this reality, but my motto is "buy once and keep for life!"
Nothing wrong with buying "made in Canada" products either.
