What would you choose The FN or G3
i like and collect both wanted to see peoples choices and why
thank you in advance

Stand tall! Stand proud for thou art Canadian
in all thy SONs command we wont take this sitting down
So Stand Tall with us ALL!!!

FN FAL for me:

-The layout of the controls is more ergonomic
-Easier on spent cases than the G3 and does not launch them into next Tuesday. This one isn't a big deal for the intended purpose, but definitely a plus from a recreational shooting/reloading standpoint.
-Subjective taste

Back in the day in Rhodesia and South Africa, both the FAL and the G3 (albeit in smaller numbers) were used by each country's security forces. My understanding is that most troops preferred the FAL.

having run both quiet a bit, I would take the FN over G3 any day.

I must confess that I have never shouldered a G3, but I have spent countless hours behind a FNC1. One of the biggest crimes is when it was made prohib to the Canadian public as it is a piece of history all over the world, not to those who served in Canada's military.

I have plenty of (old) trigger time behind both, as weĺl as others of the genre. My first choice in a 7.62x51mm Battle Rifle would actually be the Portuguese Variant of the AR10. That final 1960 variant with its 3-position Gas Regulator, grenade-launching Barrel Shroud and collapsing Cocking Handle is the best of the original AR10s and is considerably more accurate, ergonomic and lighter-recoiling than the competition. There is honestly no comparison...

To summarize,

I have handled the 4 above. The m14 platform in more recent times and I do like it.

The G3 is an absolute pig. Never understood how it was so popular.

FN. Any day, everyday.

Although the comments on the AR10 are spot on. Fantastic rifle. Loved shooting that one.

I have owned AR-10, G3, M-14 and have shot the FN. I prefer the AR-10 over all but the G3 would be next. I was offer a FN unissued and unfired for a really good price but did not buy it, not a fan of the FN

FAL :
The gas system.
Basic field strip. No pin to remove, just 1 latch.
steel machined upper & lower.
My vote STG58 (austrian)
I like the folding bipod.

The extremely positive action of the G3 inspires great confidence, it is shorter than the FAL, and the straight-back recoil probably makes for less muzzle rise on full auto.

These are the only points I can think of where the G3 bests the FAL. Otherwise, the G3 is poorly balanced so it feels heavier, the charging handle is a wench to operate, ergonomics in general are awkward, there is no hold open device, and above all the recoil is vicious. The day I put 300 rounds through a G3 I felt punch drunk, and wondered if I had detached a retina. The FN does nothing like that to me. Okay, it did tend to punch my cheekbone due to that aforementioned muzzle rise.

For nostalgias sake, my FNC1.
My SG542 is rather very dear to me now.
All AR10s I have played with rate with or above these first two.

M14,,, blah,,,.
Never played with a G3.
Once drooled all over a swiss Stgw57.

The G3 also has better build quality for the most part.

One thing I really don't like about the G3 however is the standard stock's length of pull, I don't know the length but it seems as long as most bullpups and is the main reason that these rifles are perceived as being clunky and muzzle heavy.

A shorter LOP stock turns them into a different animal.
