6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer
.300 H&H
8x56 Mannlicher-Schoenauer
9x57
9.3x57
450 Nitro Express

Tell us some stories and post pics please :D

None of those, but I will be carrying a Remington model 14 in .30 REMINGTON out in the woods next Monday . . . for our first hunt together.

When I was maybe 12 or 13, my best friend and I used to sneak out with a 6.5x54 manlicher. We never hunted with it though, just shot up pop cans and squirrels and the like. It was a neat little gun with the flip open steel magazine on the side. We never had any idea the cartridges would be hard to find, I bet Trev's Dad wondered why his stash was always dwindling even though he was never shooting. :D
I hope to try out a 9.3 some day, it would be a dandy brush gun for a bullwinkle.
Have long wanted a 300 H&H too, now there's a case that actually deserved to have a belt on it for a functional reason instead of just a marketing ploy! If I would have won that 54 million on that lotto a couple weeks ago I would have been booking a trip to tour the Rigby plant and getting sized up for one. Mmmmmmmmm, Rigby....

Classic Cartridges

Hi, I have always been a fan of the classics.

7x57--just killed the heaviest Mule deer I have shot in 20 years. rack is not record book but dressed weight at the butcher was 175 pounds.

.300 H + H - Winchester classic M-70 (re-chambered from a 30-06) have had 2 others.

.35 Whelen--Rem 700 Classic, Custom on a Win M-70 is on the way.

.300 Savage - various M-99 Savages--always account for my non-trophy tags.

.270 Win--used 2 over the years

.30-06 owned several, only hunted with one, once.

Classic cartridges

Every year I like old things better!

I have been hunting with a Winchester pre-64 model 70 in .300 H&H the past few years. It is a nice handling rifle with fairly slim 26" barrel. When I bought it there had never been a scope mounted on it and other the having an extemely ugly recoil pad, it was excellent. It shoots great. I have had excellent results with Reloader 22 and 190 SPBT Hornady bullets.

I also enjoy the classic Winchester cartridges such as the .30, .32 Special, .33, and .348 WCF. Lots of fun.

Regards,

Outdoors

I'd like a 9.3x62 but unfortunately don't own one.
The 7x57 will probably be my next investment.
At present I use an 8x57, a 303/25 and a .25-20.
Not sure if they're classic enough??
I do have two rook rifle barreled actions though, one in 32-20 and the other in the REALLY old 297/230 Morris.
The 297/230 has GOT to be classic!

Looks like not too many of us hunt with the more obscure cartridges.
I guess it depends on what you regard as obscure.
My 303/25 certainly is.
It was even a factory round here in Australia for a while but it's becoming more and more obscure as time goes on.;)
But 30-06 and .270 Win, as much as many people's Grandaddy's used 'em aren't exactly obscure....rather the opposite.
It's actually kinda sad that some of the more unusual European rounds that used to be used during the early 20th century are now treated like second class citizens.
The Lebel is a good example.
At least Graf's are making an effort to keep the respective rifles in operation.
Unfortunately, living in Australia, I don't have much hope of getting their brass.:(
What I can't fathom is that companies producing cheap rifles, like H&R for instance, aren't chambering them for .303 Brit.
There's still plenty of cheap surplus out there and it'll knock down stuff easy.
Guess I'll just have to buy an old Smellie.:)
