Classic old cartridges...

I have done a lot of hunting with a 7x61 Sharpe and Hart
It started life as an FN browning , Rebarrelled in the early 60's and I would be hunting with it right now exept the bedding blew out this summer and I am waiting fot the vet.160 gr Nosler @ 3000 f/s is a hell of a load IMHO

Haven't hunted with "obsolete" cartridges...but...

handloaded 45-70 blackpowder from my Navy Arms rolling block.

handloaded 45-70 smokkeless from my Marlin 1895 (no wscope).

both times got the deer. both times memorable shots I'll never forget.

7.62 x 54R Russian has worked for me along with the venerable old 303.

I have a 6.5x55 and a 7x57 and a 30-30, but I've never hunted much nor killed anything with them.

I'd love to have a Mannlicher in 6.5x54 though.

I am out of classics right now, but I have owned:
6.5x54 MS in a M1903 Mannlicher-Schoenauer
8x56 MS in a M1908 Mannlicher-Schoenauer (x2)
.30 US (30-40 Krag) in Winchester 1895 (made in 1897)

I have a 1903 Mannlicher-Schoenauer which I hunt with as my main rifle. We have taken a number of deer and many Varmints here on the farm(coyotes, fox ,and groundhogs). To mauser 98,I just sighted in my DWM action 9.3x62 that Bits and pieces rebarreled for me.This and the 1903 are going for Moose this fall north of Thunder Bay. It shoots very well and the recoil is a bit stout but quite manageable.Wish me luck! jim

300 Savage
250 Savage
303 Brit
30 U.S ( '95 Winchester in 30-40 Krag...1904 manufacture)
30-30... out of a 1950's piece

Some oldies, but nothing really obscure.

After some trials and tribulations(I'm going to call her 'Christine), I got my 9.3X62 up and running. First impressions are very good. She's accurate - first group went .6", and 270 gr Speer's are running about 2500 fps. Next up are the 286 gr Nosler's.

Recoil is stout but not as stout as my late, great 375 H&H.

She and I are chasing moose next month.

How old does a cartridge have to be to be deemed a "classic?"
This is just my opinion but I think you can trace a turn in technology with the introduction of the 7.62 NATO or, in other words, 308 Winchester.
From there on the short action seems to be the pinacle of compactness and flexibility, a factor which by all the advertising and the cartridges developed recently seems to be important to modern shooters.
There also are the manifold number of magnum cartridges developed after about 1950.
So probably pre-1950 is a reasonable date to fix.
Mind you there are people that would say the 308 is a classic.
It just seems to be a pertinent turning point in arms technology because from there on it can almost be said that designers were seeking to duplicate the ballistics and capabilities of pre-existing cartridges in smaller dimensions.
