Claven2's Type 81 shooting review thread

No, i didnt win the cornershot lottery. I think that was overblown anyhow, very few guns seem to actually have that defect.

Had to ask as I've seen a few reports regarding this. Glad to hear yours is good.

I'm waiting to see if Canada ammo or someone else brings these in. I'm in no hurry to be an early adopter. I've done so on a few firearms and will likely do so in the future but you always pay more and there are risks. Still cool having the newest toy though. Congrats. Thanks for spending the time on a write up. It was worth the read.

As an update, I removed the safety from the rifle today to inspect how it could be modified to a 90 degree safety. It would be VERY easy to do.

The remove the safety, you remove the receiver cover and pull out the recoil spring assembly. Look down into the action and you will see a purplish colored piece of flat spring steel resting under the safety assembly. Just push gently down on that spring and the safety pulls right out the side of the receiver.

What you will see are that there are two flats on the safety. There are no detents, the safety "clicks" into its positions by that flat spring sitting flat on the safety flats.

To make the safety a 90 degree safety, there is already a recessed area at the 90 degree section that is radiused to let the safety operate smoothly. You would just file a flat onto that radius and it will be converted to a 3 position safety: Fire, Safe and Safe.

I haven't decided if I will mod mine yet, but it's a 5 minute job with a file or in the mill.

I have been pondering this for some time also. It would be cool if a inventive vendor could come up with an ambi safety or a kit to drill and tap the other side for a selector lever with the 90deg mod.

It would be easy to manufacture. I just don't feel it's necessary.

Friggin Canada Post. My replacement rifle was out for delivery today, now it says delivery was attempted and a notice was left. I've been beside the door all day and there's no notice. Oh well, what's another day :yingyang:

LOL and yet my buddy still waits for TI to pick up his warrantied part from the post office from Dec 21st

I think I want one of these. I had no idea so many military style rifles were available in Canada until I joined here. Those vz-58 rifles look pretty similar, but are more expensive from what I’ve seen? Which would people suggest, one of these or a vz-58? I actually want an ak-47 but I was told I can’t buy those anymore.

Get CSA Vz58 off the EE and never look back at T81.

IMO if you are looking for the AK experience you will be better served with the stamped receiver 81.

You may find the 58/858 platform to be the better gun though.

Buy both. They are both different answers to the same design question; what can be made that is better than the AK.

Have fun wading through all the 81 posts, try to look for posts from actual owners. I have only seen cosmetic issues, nothing that would affect function. I would still send it back if any I got had a "defect" but really, a bolt with ugly grind marks or unreliable BHO is far from making an 81 a non-functioning paperweight, no matter how much some will troll

Unlike many here, I have both. The ergonomics are better on the t81. The mags are also more robust. Bear in mind it's a 23 year newer design.

The vz58 is a good gun, but not decidedly any better. I would recommend handling both before choosing. In my case, I prefer shooting my t81. Also, not all vz type rifles are created equal. Read up on which models to avoid before choosing. The old restricted vz58s guns from 2005/2006 were the best of breed.
