Clay buster waa12r wads

Yes, I bought some clay buster wads including the supposed equivalent to WAA12r and they have the hump in the middle of the petal like other clay buster wads. Ok for shot but I'm loading slugs and they are useless for slugs with that hump. Have had great success with the Federal wads and the Downrange yellow wads and real Winchester wads when you can find them.

I found some of the downrange f114 wads. Petals are nice and thin, but the lyman 525 doesn't sit right down to the base of the shotcup. Have you found this to be the case with yours?

I know what you mean about the Lyman slug not sitting flush at the bottom but when I load them, they compress fine and there is no bulging of the hull. Haven't shot them yet but have heard good reports with them and the Sabot slug, we shall see.

I have a few loaded up with the downrange wad as well I will be testing. I have had ok luck with waa12 (white) wads in gun club hulls with HS-6 powder. I tried universal powder as well but it seemed much harder on wads and accuracy suffered.

My 80 yard results have been outstanding (holes touching) but my 100 yard shots have been ok but not touching. This is with Longshot powder, my HS-6 loads have only been fair. I just got some Unique powder to try for my next time out.

I have some Longshot coming to me to try out. I have some bluedot rounds loaded and waiting for the range as well. What wad, hull and powder combo are you using with longshot?
My results with hs-6 have been in the neighborhood of 4" at 50 yards. I get 1.5" groups with both 1 oz Lee slug and .690" ball with hs-6. I just havnt got the accuracy I want out of the lyman slug yet.
I have taken the Lee slug and ball loads to 100 yards with poor consistency. Lots of floaters and flyers out past 70 yards it seems.
Would not trust one out hunting past 60-70 yards

Had lots of luck with Windjammer and Lightening wads. Petals seem to sheer of but wad remains in the bottom of the slug. Much like a shuttlecock.

I have had good results with 37.0 grains of Longshot with the Winchester yellow wad (I'm sure the downrange will work too), Federal Gold Medal Hull. I've also had good results with 34.0 grains of Longshot with the Federal 12s4 wad and a Federal paper bases cup hull found usually in their hunting loads. So far, Blue Dot hasn't been overly great with mine.

I'm trying different combinations to see what works with these slugs. Strange I am having a harder time finding something to work with the lyman slug. I got the Lee slugs to work well right away. My .662" round balls worked with the same recipe. The .690" balls took a bit of tweaking but got them shooting very well. Are you fellas shooting them out of a smoothbore or rifled barrel?

I'm using a rifled barrel Mossberg 930, which gives me the best results, although I'm also occasionally using a smooth bore. I haven't had much success with the .690 round ball, what load have you had success with?

My winchester sxp likes 32g - 34g of hs-6 for the 690"
Federal gold medal hulls or challenger trap hulls ( same volume )
Winchester 209 primer, 12s3 wad with a 1/8" 20 ga soft card in the shotcup.
I trim the petals so they reach the equator of the ball with the soft card under it. Standard star crimp. I put a cheerio on the ball just before I crimp the shell. My sxp will shoot these into the same hole at 50 yards with a IC choke in. My 870 skeet choke will shoot 4" groups at 50 yards with this combo.

Herco is a powder I would like to try some day. Apparently great for slugs, balls and buckshot. Not easy to obtain where I live unfortunatly.
That's the great thing about this hobby. Always some combination to test; always striving for a better group, or consistantcy.
Out of a smoothbore I may be chasing my tail for years trying to get one combination to shoot the way I want it to.
But that's the fun of it all, even when something works, there is always a different powder to try.
