So last summer i started shooting clays, trap, skeet 5stand ans sporting clays. I did it all with my 870, but i know it's not exactly teh right tool for the job. i was hitting an average of 20/25 birds.


So my questions are these.

1. is a SxS or O/U better for the above mentions sports and why. I know everyone uses and O/U, but why is that?

2. What bbl length should i be looking for?

3. i'd rather get screw in chokes, but my budget is very low so i'll most likely get fixed chokes. what should i be looking for?

4. again with my low budget ($2-500) i'll most likely end up with a double trigger model, is this a big handicap? should i save up longer and get a single trigger model?

5. What make/model can you reccommend in my price range? it would seem a bakail is about all i can afford.

6. I know tradeex sells used bakails, but does anyone know who sells brand new ones?

I use both o/u and sxs. Fit and feel is what matters. Some ppl can't handle the sight plane on a sxs I prefer it. O/u has more inline recoil so they say your second shot is faster. Whatever I use a baikal sxs with 2 triggers for doubles and have yet to here someone shoot as fast as I do. Mind you I shoot with older guys and they say they can't see the targets as well. Baikals are great guns. Little bulky lil heavy but they work. You don't need a o/u for clays games. I still use pump guns I hunt with them so why not use them. Try to handle as many as you can. Most ppl will let you try their guns for. Round or to. I shoot trap just as good with my mossberg pump as I do with my ithaca trap gun. Find one that fits and buy it. Untill then shoot the 870. As for your scores in trap I'm betting you wait a lil long before shooting. Try picking them up a lil sooner on the way up might help ya out

If you have shot trap, skeet, 5 stand and sporting you have at least as much experience as over half that will answer your questions. You seemed to have answered most of your buget questions yourself. That leaves why o/u and what length. Length is a personal preference and why o/u seems to be a popular preference that has been thrashed over in lots of thread recently.

My advice is to stick with the 870 for a while longer. Your not a bad shot. Get to a few more shoots. If you are a likable guy you will get some opportunity to try a few guns. You seem to have lots of opportunity to shoot the clay sports. I think you will learn more hanging with the clay shooters than here.

and who sells brand new bakails? i'd like to know the price difference between a new one and a tradex one.

and if there are any other inexpensive brands other than bakail i should be looking into?
 
Have you considered a semi-auto. The Stoeger M2000 is basically the same as the Benelli interia system, comes with adjustable chokes, easy to clean, would make a fine field gun, and is in your price range. It's a slam dunk imo.
 
i hate picking shells off the ground and i know you can get shell catchers but i don't like them. that's why i've been looking for a double bbl of some sort over a semi. it all depends on what i can find i suppose.
 
Epps sells new baikals. I think 28" is standard but the trend is going toward longer tubes 30" and even 32 for sporting. I prefer shorter they're faster and I hunt with my guns so its easier in and out of thick cover with a shorter gun
 
i agree with the first guys stick with the 870 till you find which gun you like best and can afford it. ive been shooting sporting clays for 5 years now and am still using an 870 (i keep having to buy the basic equipment for new sports). try lots of different guns i used to want an o/u but found i could shoot a semi much better even though i hated chasing shells.try berreta 391 for a semi (not cheap but very nice) and if you are going o/u check out the stoeger they are very reasonably priced. save up for single trigger.
