Clay Thrower

Hi,
I have been looking at a few string release clay throwes for recreational use. I have narrowed it down to the Champion High Fly for $21.36 and the Trius Birdshooter II for $35.36. I don't mind paying the extra $14 if it is worth it, but if there is no difference in quality, I'd go for the cheaper one. If nayone knows much about either of these or has experience with them, any help is appreciated.

These things can be great, or very frustrating. While they all work well when new, as they get older problems surface. Take, for instance, the target holder on the Champion model. You see how it is a "U" shaped channel and the clay sits inside of it, with aluminum over the top as well as the bottom of the clay. As time passes, that aluminum gets bent, and will start breaking the clays as you release them. Then you have to stop and bend it back, and after some time it gets "wavy" instead of straight. Maintenance increases proportionately with use.

Now look at the Trius thrower. The holder has a bottom and a side, but no top. I have had better success with this design. However, the frame on the Trius Birdshooter is a little flimsy, and over time will flex and bend. The Original is a better design, as is the One - Step. Naturally, they cost more.

I have thrown thousands of clays from devices like these. It is not always easy to pound them into the ground so that they stay put, and mounting them on a rim is not the perfect answer either. In the end I coughed up the cash for the Trius TrapMaster. My knees thank me for it, you are pulling on the arm at a much straighter angle, and the swiveling mount makes for a greater variety of target presentations.

If circumstances forbid the TrapMaster, then the Trius One Step or Original would be my next choices. At least they last a while. Just my $0.02.

x1 for the "one step". i got one a few weeks ago from cabelas. i have used the more basic "string" trigger traps and have found them to be a pita, especially when shooting on your own. the "one step" allows you to use only one hand to feed and reset the throwing arm and keep the gun in your other hand

Sorry I can't help you decide between the 2 you have narrowed it down to, but my experience with my one-step has been great.

One major advantage the design has over others is that you don't have to fight against the spring to reset the arm, since spring tension is only applied once you start stepping on the step. This in itself was worth getting this one over the others for me, while not spending much more.

I'd love to have one of the sit-down models where you can vary the angles/direction on the fly a lot more easily, but I don't have a truck, and am already running low on room to pack more gear with me when I head to the range. Electric would be great, but also heavy and bulky.

This has been discussed in several threads but I'll throw in another vote for the Trius One Step. It's easy to use and throws good targets. I've put a couple K's through mine with no issues.

Easy to throw on the ATV for some informal in the woods shooting or take along to the range for practice.
