Clean powder for >45acp

I've just about burnt up my pound of Unique,and am looking for a different powder to try for my .45acp,as well as my 9mm. It will be used mostly for cast 200gr bullets in the .45,at medium velocities. The Unique was fine except that it is very dirty. I'm hoping for something that has similar bulk to Unique,as it makes it difficult to double charge.
In the 9mm I'll be using 125gr jacketed,as I just can't get my 115gr cast to stop leading the barrel. I'll probably try them some more with the new powder though,just to see if I can make it work.
 
You want clean ? You want Vv N320! Actually I expect the N330 would be better under a 230 gr bullet but N320 is sweet under my 185gr JSWC and clean as a whistle. Its "Top Fuel" for firearms and worth the price IMHO and as long as I can get my hands on it I'll never use anything else. For what its worth, Bill Wilson likes it too.
 
IF you are looking for a combo powder I would suggest Win 231. I use it in both 9MM and .45acp. Win 231 is about as fast a powder as I would recomend fo rthe 9MM.

You didn't ask but I also suggest you go with the 124/125 gr lead bullet over the 115. You likely are driving the 115 to fast resulting in the leading. You will find the 124 gr bullet to be slightly more accurate in most 9MM guns due to the rate of twist.

I load 4.1 ge Win 231 under my cast 124 gr truncated cone 9MM bullets sized .357. This load is accurate, burns consistantly and makes PF for IDPA & IPSC.

My 200 gr LSWC load for my .45acp is 5.3 gr of Win 231. Again the load makes PF for IDPA. Load is accurate in my 1911's and CZ97B. Bullets are sized .452

win 231 is not the powder to use for light loads. I gotta guy who does all my ammo and he insists on using 231. Why? Because it feeds so well. I spec loads which barely make IDPA PF. This means that they have to run 770fps. Win 231, at this speed is smutty-dirty, and a pain in the backside to clean up after.

I use either 5.0 or 5.6 grains of WW231 with a 200 grain lswc and since there's usually a slight head wind at the range I use I often come home covered with powder residue.
Maybe I'll try loading 700X or Unique for awhile.

Hi

If you want to go for clean the VV powders are supposed to be the way to go. My guess is that it's going to take a little work to come up with a clean 700 to 750 fps load no matter what you do. Clean loads generally are 850 fps ....

I'm obviously still beating the Vv N320 drum here, to clarify though, I do run with 5.8gr of the stuff to make IPSC Major and cycle my 3 7/8" barreled Carry-comp reliably. This gives me 960 f/s with 185gr JSWC. You'd use less powder with your 200gr bullet and longer barrel, of course. Vv N320 meters beautifully, is super clean, and if I liked it any better I'd be sprinkling it on my morning eggs :D .
 
One thing to remember. If you are shooting cast bullets you are going to have to clean your guns. Most of the gunk build up is from the lube burning off, so to the smoke. Clean and shooting lead bullets are almost a contradiction in terms IMHO.

It would be better for you if a shooter with actual experience answered this but just piddling around with "Quickload" it looks like N330 would be the choice. You'd need to work up a load of course, but the program shows acceptable pressures to around a 4 gr loading, giving a MV of just over 1000 f/s for this combination.

I personally don't bank on "Quickload" data but this tool will give you some idea and a load using N330 should do the trick.
 
Thanks for all the advice guys,and for the tips about 9mm bullets too. I'll see if there's any VV available locally.
