Cleaned the shotguns

Did someone say wood??? Nothing better then a sweet piece of walnut!

Let's hear it for wood. Ever wonder why a 100- to 150-year-old gun can still have flawless wood-to-metal fit? It was not unusual for walnut blanks to be stored for 30-50 years before being fashioned into stocks. Incredibly stable wood. So, a stock made in 1900 can easily have been made with a blank cut in the 1850s, and carefully dried.

Same went for musical instruments, where 50-year wood might be considered too 'green' for working!

Jeez Steve. That one’s a beaut!

I have a blank, purported to have been purchased from Purdey’s in the mid 1960s. I imagine that if Purdeys had it in the 1964, it was at least 10 years old at that point. If correct, it’s damn close to 70 years old now and could be much older.

I’m thinking it’s probably pretty stable at this point.

SMH (shaking my head) and here I thought 3 12ga were too much....
Much respect El Capitain! ... Very nice wood on many of them... Congrats!

James next time my wife utters the quote how many do you need I will show her this pic ,well done my friend ...I bow to your abundance and the double fever I have acquired ..

Lol. When she asks that question, ask her how much jewellery she needs. :stirthepot2:Laugh2

Whenever I think I have a few too many I think of some American friends who have collections that number in the 100s. Multiple 100s!

Wow canvasback - with that many guns, it would be easier to just stand them up in the corner at the carwash and hit 'em with the soap function. lol

Thanks Rob for bring this thread back onto topic, although I think I'll skip the car wash idea. Hahaha!

I didn't mean to completely derail it. Grouse Man made a good point. Depending on where we are, for some of us the season may be winding down a bit. Or some guns are done for the season. Whichever may be the case, and it may seem obvious, but don't forget to give them a good cleaning before they get stowed away for the long sleep until next year. I must confess that on occasion I have pulled a gun out in the spring or summer and discovered it slipped through the cracks.

I'm glad I run skeet year round as there is not much of an upland season around me so I can use my doubles thru out the entire year. It's nice not having to pick empties up out of the snow. Plus I get the joy of teaching my daughter how to clean them

We're still good until mid-January... so hopefully a few more weekends of chasing birds in the wood (but darn, the days are getting shorter and colder)

Canvasback: Nice single hiding in there!

Haha You saw it. One of my favorites. An English J & W Tolley 12 ga. 30”’barrels. 5 pounds.

Drop them off at my place. I'll make sure they're all safe and clean....I'll let you borrow them after lol

I've made that offer before. Not that I have a lot of room in my safe, but heck I'll buy a new safe.

Interesting to see the collection of someone who has nearly as many side by sides as I have walking sticks, which as some will tell you is saying something.

I built a gun room for myself. Went a lil over board with construction. Turns out the contractor was correct that I'd buckle the main floor but oh well. I've been down sizing my collection but I'm still above 70. I wouldn't have room for enough safes to hold my collection. Bonus is I never had to move safes in and I won't need to take them out when I move

I have a few other guns guns besides the SxS but not that much. Couple pumps, couple of O/U, a semi auto, couple of .22 rifles. A couple centre fire rifles. But that's it really. No handguns.
