Hello Nuts,
I have recently purchased a sig 45 scorpion and want only the best 45 ammo for it. What brand is the best on guns, cleanest and overall just the best for a 45 calibre handgun?

Cheers,
Wik

I found the ammo from Custom Reloading Services to be the best. Not sure what powder they use, but it burns very cleanly and leaves very little residue. After a range session, my guns are much cleaner than if I used other factory ammo. Even cleaner than when I use my own reloads loaded with VV N320.

As I developed my own pistol loads for IPSC, I used the CRS ammo as a benchmark for each chrony session. Their avg deviation and spread was less than half that of factory ammo like American Eagle, CCI, or Winchester. For their 147gr 9mm stuff I was getting an avg deviation of ~5fps, and a spread of ~30fps.

Sadly, while my own reloads are now better than factory, I'm still not close to this level of consistency. But I'm still finding things to tweak on my 650 :)

Weird you say that. I found their 9mm to be fine but their .45 to be really dirty in my 1911s. After a few rounds, both my 1911s don't close onto the next round and I have to manually push the slide into lock.
I've dropped a live round into a dirty barrel after a shooting session of less than 100rds and the round sits up. I did the same thing again after cleaning the barrel and the round falls in all the way. To be fair, the same thing happens with factory ammo also. Maybe my 1911s are just tight!

After about a dozen boxes of premium ammo, you'll joining the rest of us shooting white box/UMC, sure you clean slightly more often, but it still makes holes virtually the same.
I could see going premium for bullseye or in rifles where the large distances magnify the slight performance differences in ammo. But at 25yards i bet most shooters couldn't realize any actual performance difference if you sneak a few into their mags.

That's strange. I run their 45acp in my STI 1911's (Trojan & TargetMaster) just fine. But then I also bought crates of the Norinco 45acp stuff which runs fine too - although it does produce noticeably more fouling. The primers in the Norinco ammo are too hard for my W&W 625's, so I went back to running the C.R.S. stuff. I think they use Federal primers, have no problems running a 6lb DA trigger pull. Haven't done as much chrony work on the 45acp stuff, but will start that soon as I start reloading to feed my 625's :)

I'm interested, which 1911 do you have, or is it an aftermarket barrel?

I first used the CRS ammo in a S&W 1911PD Commander model and it got dirty fast! Within 20 rds!
The next one was a SIG 1911. Same thing within 40 rds. Just have to nudge the slide back into battery on both guns.
Stock barrels, both of them. No problem with the CRS stuff in my P220.

Not really worried as I don't shoot the 1911s as much anyways. Their 9mm works just fine! I use them a lot and nevef had a misfire or dud. And you cannot beat their price if you are local!

Winchester in super X is good, Really clean in my 9. I suspect any type of 45 cal ammo will be dirty as it is such a large round.
