I am going to be doing some load development using varget and benchmark. I can see that the benchmark is going to be nicer when throwing charges, but does anyone have any insight into how dirty these powders are?

What are

you loading for?

All powders can be fairly clean when the optimum load/burn ratio is achieved.

The cleanest I have ever used is the VV133 that I use in my 6PPC. The first patch comes out black the second has almost NO black at all.

it's for .223. I have been using varget so far and have noticed it gets dirtier as I approach maximum load. I am about to start playing with benchmark and am curious as to how it stacks up

The only powder I have used is Benchmark for the .223 so I don't have a comparison, but would say it's pretty clean burning.

I haven't tried it in rifles, but Vihtavuori powders are among the cleanest handgun powders. (But you had better sit down before you look at the prices )

I don't find Varget or Benchmark particularly dirty.

Where do you find it getting dirty? In the barrel or on the case necks?

If you are seeing sine wave type powder marks on your necks, that is a good thing.

Apparently is it a sign that the necks are expanding at an optimal rate.

I get them on my 6BR necks and it seems to coincide with my accurate loads.

I am not going to argue with the results I get.

Not the greatest example.....but you get the idea.
