So I just got an 8.5inch dlask rem 870. I plan on shooting it tomorrow at an indoor range at 40 yards just to see if I can handle the pistol grip. But anyway, Im wondering about cleaning the gun. The part in the manual that talks about cleaning the trigger plate assembly says to use RemOil and says to spray once then leave for 15 mins then spray again and shake off to clean. Am I going to hurt the assembly if i just use whatever cleaning solvent I have and do i really need to spray the assembly twice and shake it off. Is there any other way of cleaning this part. Thanks for any help.

You wont hurt it at all. The crap you read in the manuals is just that, crap. Its no different than your vehicle owners manual which always states you can only use 92/96/98 octane, nothing less. Yeah right.

Pull out the trigger group before you shoot it. Take a mental picture of what a "clean" trigger group looks like. after shooting it, remove TG clean or wipe away what wasn't there before firing, add a touch of lube to the pins/hinges of the hammer and trigger, reassemble. Its a shotgun, you really cant hurt them. Same with the barrel. Wipe it clean with a shotgun mop or even some solvent soaked paper towel. Wipe until it shines, wipe out the excess then I run a lightly oiled patch through once for protection. Light oil to the outside as well, wipe off excess. The Silicone reel cloths are good for that.
