Cleaning a scoped M-14?

Up until now I've been cleaning my M-14 using the recommended 'upside down' method.
But I've recently added a scope mounted on a CASM rail, so I'm wondering: What's the best way
of cleaning my rifle now without getting nasty toxins pouring all over my optics?
I've been using a "Bore Snake" this year with great success.

How do other members with scoped M-14s manage it? Is there a trick?
Maybe The Wife's shower cap snapped over the scope? :)o |
 
I clean mine right side up, but close the gas valve to keep liquid from running into the gas system. Wrap a rag around the scope to protect from splatter.
Remember to open the valve again when you go shooting.
 
I'll update a video shortly. Too complicated to explain and easier to show. I still clean upside down and use a cleaning port and access everything from the magazine well and use a chamber maid to scrub the chamber.

I use a boresnake as well.
shutting the gas valve is an important step I bet most guys miss altogether.

Mounted the scope yesterday and fired 20 rd before I realized I'd have to find some different method of cleaning.
I did run the Snake thru a bunch of times.
 
Not to say that it's bad, but I don't use snakes. I use an Otis. You can clean an Otis and and know that you got all the contaminants off the coated cable. With a bore snake, it's only clean once. After that, no matter how many times you wash it, it will always be dirty. Just something to consider. I actually use an Otis with a Jag. I cut a slit in the patch and thread the jag onto the Otis cable, then pull it through the bore.

That is true but it wouldn't be far off, if at all. The advantage of a rail over traditional mounts. For one of my rifles I swap scopes with, doesn't loose zero when when I bolt the scope back on.
 
Clean right side up, rifle slanted towards muzzle, scope caps on, with bore guide on muzzle,,,clean gas system after to remove fouling and solvents,,
