I agree with most of the advice above but all my own guns have barrels glass bedded to protect the wood from water. Also, I dismount the barrel wnd I think one purpose of escutcherons is to make it easier to push out barrel pins without damaging the wood. Regardless, all pins sshould have a slight btaper toward the ends and rounded ends so they won't chip out the wood.
One twist not mentioned above, that I have found worthwhile, is to dry the wet bore with several patches and wipe the bore with an oily patch WHILE THE BARREL IS STILL WARM. Good luck.
