Pipe Cleaners. Goto the dollar store and pick up a bag of Pipe Cleaners 100 For 1$ and run it though. Shoot carbon cleaner down soften up the carbon and then run pipe cleaners though it.
The only part I don't pay much attention to on my AR or C8, is the lower. The lower will pretty much work regardless of how dirty they are.
I clean my AR AND my C8 every time I fire them, whether I fire 5 shots, or 600. And I pull them through with a bore-snake before shooting at the range. I used to use CLP, now I use "Slip 2000," both as a cleaner, and for oil after cleaning. every 1000 rds or so, I use "Sweets 7.62 copper Solvent" to de-foul the bore. It is chrome, but it still gets fouled.
I belive that regular cleaning increases barrel life, and I'd say I have proof of that too. I was issued my NEW C8 at the same time as all my buddies, and put the same # of rounds through it (give or take 1000) as they all have. My barrel was worn out & replaced 1 month ago, but almost every other gun in the platoon was replaced before Christmas.
That may not be a scientific test, but it's good enough for me.
