cleaning bolt?

Hi there,

I have a Remington 700 SPS Varmint and I was wondering if there was a need to clean the bolt in any way?

I have cleaned the barrel using Hobbs number 9 (saturated patch, wait a minute or 2 then dry patches till they come out clean)

but was wondering if there is anything else that needs to be done.

regularly? just wipe the bolt down and give the bolt face a good rub to clean up the brass bits and other powder gunk.

Every now and again i disassemble the bolt from the firing pin internals and clean and oil them as well. but only rarely.
 
Wipe it down with an oiled patch after cleaning the barrel.

About every second cleaning put a little dab of grease on the face of the locking lugs. This prevents galling of the surfaces.

All rifles need this grease on the locking lugs. I use moly grease I have stored in a 35 mm film can on my bench.

My shooting kit (range bag) has some grease in a glue stick tube in case I need grease on the range.
 
If you never clean the bolt and allow some minor surface rust you'll get better positive lockup and your rifle will be more accurate.

Ya that's a load of crud I just made up. Of course you should clean it.
Use G96 it'll coat the bolt so it just needs a wipe. A little bit of oil where the bolt contacts the receiver and you're ready to go.
