Cleaning cosmoline from Tokarev TT33 pistol

So I got the gun on Thursday and all appears good. I'm gonna strip down the pistol next week and get it nice and clean but I have already disassembled the magazines and cleaned them out. Both were pretty greasy and were soaked in Simple Green and then brushed clean. Took a few cycles of rinsing then brushing but they've come up pretty good now.

Any of the above-mentioned methods works. My choice, disassemble + a couple of minutes in boiling water followed by generous application of any gun treatment product that you have handy (G96, Rem Oil...) is more than enough. Don't get too fussy with her. She is not a trophy date, she is a working girl! :p

Make sure you take a look at the firing pin housing. you will need a punch to get the pin & spring out.

An all-metal pistol? Strip it down, dump the parts in boiling water for a few minutes, strain, then spray them with WD-40 or some other cheap water displacer, compressed air and lube. Doesn't get any easier.

Same question, how do I get the grips off for cleaning, do they prise off?

There's a good few Youtube videos that show how to take the grips off. Basically you look inside where the magazine goes and there are some latches that you move over.....It's really simple....The videos will probably show it easier than I can explain it.

Yuck. Those are NOT original WW2 grips.

Looks like very recent manufacture from beech (not birch like they should be) and of the totally wrong pattern.

Castrol Really Clean engine degreaser just melted the Cosmoline off. No fumes, no flames, just wear rubber gloves. Really recommend it. Did not hurt the grips, which I could not get off and I did not want to use a lot of force and risk breaking them.
