I have about 20 Sabre Defence mags that I want to clean and lube inside. No problems popping the Magpul Ranger plates off and dissasemble or will the rivet cause problems? What is the best way to go about cleaning the inside of pinned mags with a rivet? Thanks guys.

why would you lube a magazine? that will attract dirt to stick to it. Dont lube magazines, keep them dry. The rivets will prevent the follower from coming out, forever.

Pop the base plate off, toss them into a bucket of hot soapy water and swish them around before rinsing them with a hose. Place them in the sun to dry. Clean enough is clean enough.

They are mags I rarely use and just want to give them a wipe with CLP on the insides. I know not to leave lube in mags but these are storage items that I want to be clean and ready to use whether its a day from now or 10 years. I love my PMAGs too much.

Can I legally drill the pop rivet out for maintenance and reinstal after I am done? I think it is legal for cleaning as long as they get done one by one.

Thanks for the responses guys.

No, thats not legal. Legally you cannot remove the rivet for any period of time.
However, what no one sees wont hurt them, dont do it outdoors and you'll be fine.

There's no need to remove the pop rivet or the baseplate. You can remove the spring and follower from the top of the magazine.

Not sure where you got that, but you can certainly remove the follower and spring from the bottom as well without removing the pop rivet. Twist the follower on its back enough to get past the rivet and slide it all down and out.

Not with anti tilt followers.

So it sounds like other than taking all the rivets out, cleaning my mags and re-riveting is the only way to do this. I love how our guns laws work, I think the 5 round limit is for our steel mags to rust away never to be used in an evil Black Rifle ever again.

What a hassle. I miss the good old days.

I wonder how many of you have actually tried to remove the spring and follower from the top of the magazine before posting it's not possible.

Note the anti-tilt follower. However, it's easier to remove the parts from the bottom.

I missed photographing the rivet, but if you need to see it too I'll be happy to oblige.

As easy shows above, it is possible to disassemble without removing the pop rivet. I don't know why you'd oil the mag body though. Unless you have steel mags with the finish damaged? Aluminum isn't going to rust and the lube will attract dirt and debris.

You must be thinking that magazines are riveted to 5 rounds while the spring and follower are still in the magazine.

They are not.

Spring and follower are removed from the bottom and reinstalled after the hole is drilled and the rivet is in place.

The anti-tilt leg on the follower is at the forward part of the magazine and has no bearing on the spine of the mag where the pop rivet is installed.

I know how they rivet mags and the internals, I just want to clean my friggen' mags without so much hassle.

Yes. I want to LUBE MY MAGS! I know it collects dirt and debris, like I said earlier in my post I want to lube them for long term storage, not range use. I guess in Canada it is impossible to lube something like mags. For the time I've spent on this thread I could have done them all in 5 minutes if I could just pop baseplates off like the rest of the free world does.

Does anyone have a way that doesn't take 10 minutes a mag to disassemble?

All my anti tilt followers have ears front and rear which is why they don't tilt.

They don't come out as they are blocked into place by the rivet.

I don't understand. Are you saying you cannot remove the baseplates off your Sabre Defence magazines?
