Cleaning lead out of you barrel

but did find this :

It is called Ed's Red. Find it on google if you like. CALLED "ER"

I mix 1/3rd each of Mercon Dexron Trans fluid, K1 kerosene and mineral spirits (paint thinner).

For lead build up clean as normal with brush and ER and then run a sloppy wet patch of ER in bore and place muzzle down on paper towel propped against loading bench or whatever.

The run a tight patch down bore after about 30 minutes soaking and you will see slivers of lead come out. ER will penetrate under the lead and release it.

I leave bores coated with ER. I had one rifle I left 14 months with wet bore and bore scoped it. It was still quite wet with ER.

I get a 2 gallon Blitz can at Wally World and mix 2 quarts of the above so wind up with 1.5 gallons of it. Cost will be maybe 15.00 with can, and other stuff required.

I have it in lab wash bottles and industrial spray bottles (from Home Depot). I use it for many applications including killing fire ants. Just kick the mound, get them all agitated and lightly spray those you see running around. Come back an hour later and kick mound and none will come out. Mound is dead. good on wasps, locks too. won't gum up.

Try it, don't think you will go back to anything else.

Havent tryed it though , But I think I will give it a shot .

wow, 'Ed' discovered exactly what ATF is formulated/marketed for :D
ive been using ATF to clean/protect guns from rust for years. any mechanic could have told you this - ATF is not only a high-tech lubricant and corrosion/oxidization protectant but it also has detergent properties that clean and condition the metal, and handles extreme temperatures (hot and cold) very well.
if any of you have ever worked on an automatic transmission youd know how immaculately clean they are inside :ninja:

there are a couple things you have to worry about with Dextron III/Mercon ATF:
-like bleach it will eat away at natural fiber materials after awhile, so dont go rubbing it all over your guns and then put them down on a sofa, bed, etc. depending on the type of material it may will eventually start to eat the cloth just like bleach will.
-its mega poisonous so if you have stupid pets (pretty much any domestic animal) dont leave your guns where they can lick it off. along with antifreeze some animals are attracted to this stuff and if they ingest enough of it they will die.

I've had the recipe for Ed's Red but never bothered to mix any up. I've got a few hundred rounds of cast loaded for my wife's '06, so I might have to try it this summer.

I can vouch to the corrosiveness of Vinegar. I cleaned some very dirty .44 cases with a vinegar solution in my ultra sonic cleaner and for what ever reason didn't put them through a clean water rinse cycle. When I looked at them again a couple of days later, they were beyond help and I threw them away.

Anyone with an Outers Foul-Out can get a lead solution as well as the copper solution.

Mercury was always given as a good solution to lead fouling before anyone was told it would kill them. We used to play with the stuff when we were kids and we are still around, but I guess like asbestos it is accumulative.

I had good success with the Lewis lead remover, particularly after shooting factory SWC's in my .357's. I never had any difficulty using it in handguns, but never attempted to clean a rifle barrel with one.

JB Bore Past and Kroil is a useful way of cleaning fouling from a rough barrel prone to fouling, and perhaps, over time, might even improve the bore's fouling characteristics. Even if it doesn't, at least you'll be starting with a clean bore.

Canuck44 , I don't have leading issues in the barrel , you cure will not fix my problem , I have an expansion chamber after the barrel that cakes up with lead - that is my problem.
I got the ed & red cure ( thought that was a cheezie late night show ??) ingredients and will give that a go starting tonight.
I'll keep you posted.

Ed's red was less than overwhelming .
I let it sit in it over night , it never worked any better than anything else I've tried .
Seems like a good cleaner mind you .

Dan if you go to the Cast Bullet Forum there is a sticky there showing the incrediants for these lead remover swipes and how to make them.
