Cleaning my AR-15's chamber.

Just north of Toronto, thankfully.
Out shooting yesterday and I noticed that the shoulders on some live rounds I'd ejected had carbon build-up all over em. Wondering what the best way to clean the chamber on the AR is? I've been told a 45 bore brush with a bore swab wrapped around it works well, but I'm a little concerned about scratching the chamber if I'm scrubbing that in and out.

I'm a newb, help appreciated. :) Still getting used to how gawd awfull dirty this rifle gets. Reminds me of my old Hakim back in the day. (Except it smells better of course.)
 
+1 with carbonrod.
Good chamber brush designed for AR is a must. I always use bore mob to wipe off the carbon residue and gunk after brushing. We need to keep the chamber clean without any carbon deposit which will help eliminating feeding problems.;)
 
my technique - I use the useless plastic Glock cleaning rod. I just jam a piece of patch into the chamber and rotate.

Chamber brush is for the army. I don't see the point of using such aggressive tool with recreational useage.
 
Find a brush the appropriate size and with a short rod put it in your battery drill with some solvent, excellent for cylinders with lead build up as well. Obviously don't get too carried away and overdo it. Match chambers get polished with about 400 grit sandpaper so a brush won't touch a chrome chamber or even SS, just watch if the brush has a steel end sticking out.
 
Also pipe-cleaners work well too (since you can articulate them). Grab a crapload of those, as they work even better for cleaning inside your gas tube!

You shouldnt be sticking anything in your gas tube. Its not needed and you can do more harm than good.

I did actually do it on a C7 in basic (gas tube not the bolt carrier key) when I didnt know any better, and the pipe cleaner came out absolutely clean.
 
Clarification needed here. You can safely clean inside the port (if I have my terminology correct) on the bolt carrier right? If not, why not? Isn't that what that little pipe cleaner in the kit is for?
 
Wow, there's an awful lot of confusing information in this thread. What are you using your rifle for? What's wrong with just wadding some scrap cloth around the end of an old toothbrush, spraying it with CLP and gently scrubbing the chamber? Power drills and metal brushes sound like serious overkill to me...
