Cleaning my M4.....Do I really need to?

What your the portion of the gun where the barrel is attached.....lets call it the barrel attachment point. I havent really gotten in there too well and notice lots of dirt in there..... where the barrel joins the reciever....
seems like one of those hard to reach places to me.

all i do is wipe the barrel out with solvent.....gun slick i believe. then clean the bolt and its parts with solvent....give the internals a little wipe down then oil her up and toss it back together.
if she clicks its good.

i dont care to read the instructions...actually my rifle never came with any now that i think about it.....so what am i missing...should i be using pipe cleaners to really get in there..... like the gas return part of the bolt...
 
I heard that the sweat of chris costa from magpul is all you need to grease your gun....it only has to be lubed once after that....

god i am such a marketing whore and have bought that companies products hook line and sinker.

Any bits that get shiney with wear (note: The buffer and extension do not - even if they get shiney with wear - ever need lubrication) It's probably easier to simply rub the internals down with CLP for storage and carry a spray bottle of CLP to the range to spray down the BCG before you shoot. If it stops feeling smooth, spray it again, Sam. It's important for the rifle to be run damp.
 
Keep the chamber clean. Run it wet. You don't have to go overboard on cleaning. Just wipe it down and re-lube. Occasionally do a more thorough clean when the carbon builds up and clean the bore. Don't obsess.

For those detail cleans, I have an ultrasonic cleaner. I just drop in the BCG for a thorough cleaning now and then. But mostly I just do a routine wipe down and relube.

hoo boy was i getting flashbacks on this guy- he needs to meet the CPO i had for basic-I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU'VE BEEN TOLD, CLEAN IT ANYWAY- and yes , that's not near the VOLUME at which he spaketh to you-
 
canadian tire sells a "4 piece hook and pick set" thats good for getting swabs into the recesses of the upper receiver and trigger group if you dont feel like dismantling the trigger group.
 
get an otis kit. it comes with this angled scraper to get in the barrel ext. and all the little slots. and a boresnake. i use CLP to clean, then Mili-tec to lube after. should take about 30 minutes to clean a dirty AR.
 
All you need is:
Chamber Brush
Bore Brush
Pull Through
Rod Sections
CLP


A 14.5" M4 will can fire over 35,000 rounds before cleaning (M855) with only adding lube every 5k.

Most guns get overcleaned.
 
Depending on the firing schedule, cold hammer fordged chrome lined barrel shot conservatibvely - should give aprox 20-30k service life with great accuracy (Milspec steel - or a partically better steel used by some people).

The gas port will badly errode - and the chrome will start to flake and accuracy will be ass -- but as long as your bolt does not have issues - the gun will keep cycling.
