Cleaning precision rifles - How often ?

I clean the lug area way more and my trigger on my .308 usually 500 plus rounds before cleaning the barrel. My .338 LM usually gets cleaned around 75-100 rounds. My fifty usually around 60 rounds the big guns definately foul quicker then the lil .308. I always use a bore guide a hardly ever need a brush and when I do I use it sparingly.

Wipe out is my favorite I use the Accelerator, Patch-Out and foaming Patch out. Patch out dissolves copper quickly when used with Accelerator and will not harm your barrel or finish! No brainer!

Frechies be crazy ! I guess that explains me I have the crazy blood coursing through my veins bunch of lil fruity Frenchmen in neon tights doing weird frenchy chit! Lol! Swissin revealed to me he shaves with the foaming bore cleaner! I hope he meant his face ;-)

well thanks again everyone. I will follow your suggestions and wipe only when necessary (ie: moisture) and clean when my groups get bigger !!

perfect, I like that

I carry my Otis cleaning kit everywhere I go and usually run a light oil patch through my rifle after every 20 shots, but that's my own practice and not better, or more correct than anyone else's; it's been working for me.

An old friend of my family who was a gun smith for 50 years told me you can never clean your gun too much as long as it's being done correctly...meaning not dripping in oil, or stripping it of good lubricants.

Cheers,

Keep in mind my friend that when we are talking about "wipe out" its actually the name of a foaming bore cleaner. We aren't simply wiping out the barrel lol. Just wanted to make sure :)

Nah you got too much real life experience! That's frowned upon! You have 0 cred you are not poser enough LOL! Finally you speak the truth and have good info my heads going to explode! I think I am going to buy a used dirt rope off of Caramel up my CGN tough guy status;)

Tomorrow, i will go at le Baron for many things but i wont forget a brand new Boresnake for my new FNAR Competition 308 and one for my Sig SSG 3000, to each their own... JP.

Boresnakes are so yesterday! The "Dirt Rope" is what you need ! I will have them available in neon green!

Indeed, I am being left with the impression that some on here have a very limited regime. At this stage I run 30cals and 12ga, and one 8mm, none the less I have bronze brushes, poly brushes, nylon, PH style jags, VFG stuff, cheap Outers crap etc. Each tool for its own job. The OP was about precision admittedly, but I have yet to see anything that did everything well. If you are using the same powder, bullet and primer I guess you can narrow it down, but if you run a wide range of loads etc, you might want more. For me there is cleaning (quick car wash), then there is 'cleaning' (detailing).
As specifically for a bore snake, like wise I have never seen one break, but I have never tried to pull a 338 down a 22 bore. They do a good job on powder, and thats about it, but its enough for me, before the better quailty stuff goes through the bore.

Cleaning a rifle is like speaking English, i dont really understand why peoples invest so much on brushes, and cleaning stuff, a rifle that shoot good need not much, like my English, i speak it and write good but i dont understand it... JP.

Just curious, how does Wipeout compare to Hoppes #9. I was schooled using Hoppes many years ago, but open to better ways. I just don't want to have to learn a whole new CCB/FCB cleaning regimen. I have it down to 134- 150 rds, POI starts to move, then clean and back to POI without fuss.

I have never used a boresnake in any gun, never shaved with Wipeout, but I did accidently brush my teeth with polysporin early one morning at "Boots and Saddles." So if that will help get an experienced answer on the W/O vs Hoppes, TIA.

The best bore cleaner I have found for badly fouled rifling is called Sweets 7.62. I love that stuff but it's hard to find. I find it works much better the Hoppes but YMMV ... As is evident on this board and in this thread.

Everyone take a pill and do what u like with your own money! I only used #9 and bench rest for cleaning right up til Viper ( on CGN ) showed me wipe out. Why would u not use something that requires no brushing and can't ruin your bore? Sweets works, this I know. But I'm pretty certain it's ammonia based. It can eat the bore if it stays too long in there. And as for the dirt rope aka boresnake... just don't do it for the love of god. They collect dirt and contaminates then you're gonna pull that down your $700 Kreiger? Really? Doesn't seem smart to me.

You can be in the club for brushing your teeth with polysporin. Yuck.

Aw iv got it all wrong, you guys mean the really cool old italian guy at the range with the cool yellow glasses and combat gear that takes a shot, then smokes a cigar while slowly (like really slowly, push it a couple inches, smoke cigar, repeat) running a patches down the bore aint doin it right? I figured he must know what he is doin, even has some kinda patch catcher at the end of his bore. iv never seen his target, i think it takes all afternoon for him to finish one.
