Hi all,

I have lots of experience with bolt action rifles but none with lever action rifles and I am thinking of adding a Henry big boy to my herd. I have watched several videos on you tube of field stripping a lever action ( Henry and others) and I am thinking it looks quite complicated.
My question is: Do you have to field strip the gun every time you clean it or can you just take the lever and bolt out toclean the barrell?
Can you, vey simply just use a bore snake and not clean the receiver too much?

Opinions and your expériences would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Gilbert

Mine is a couple years old, and the owners manual specifically says there is not a need to disassemble it for cleaning. To clean it, using a muzzle guide, i send a plastic loop on a carbon fibre rod to the chamber, put on a lightly oiled or lightly " solvented" patch, and pull it back through. gently of course.
Also do the same with my BLR, since browning highly discourages rifle disassembly.
Once a year on the Henry, i do fully take it down and give it a good once over.

I have owned a couple of lever actions (marlin's), the marlin instructions clearly state that there is no need to dissassemble the firearm for maintence. Just simply remove the bolt, clean the action and give it a pull through. Easy to maintain right..

I have found this only worked for me if the weapon was used at the range.

I found in the first year I used it hunting in BC were you could spend the whole day in the rain that I found I had some major compents rust up and that the rifle had to be disassembled to maintain it after each hunting trip as it was soaking wet. While this was not hard I found it a lot more complicated than a bolt or semi to do. I also found I had a POI shift if I tightented the magazine screw a bit differently.

Given this I currently just hunt with bolt and semi rifles.

I know I will probably get a lot of people disagreeing with me as lever actions for hunting are so popular and even the people at Marlin said there was no reason to disassemble it further but I found out the hard way if I did not do it after spending a bit of time in the rain I would have rust developing on the underside of the barrel or the magazine tube.
