Cleaning SKS, Hoppes#9 alternative.

I have been experimenting. For one it is a $180 Russian SKS so I have used only WD40 on it, other than my first 500 rounds fired session. I have had it over a year and have put well over 2,500 rounds through it and have not 1 spot of rust or Carbon build up. I can say for the first 500 round session that I did I used Ed's red (which I do like a lot it works great), but to buy all ingredients is a little costly and to mix it all up a pain in the posterior region. Give WD40 a shot! It literally melts carbon deposits as you spray it on. It lubricates, and also drives away moisture one stop shop. Just spray it wipe it all down pull the barrel through with clean dry patch then one lightly oiled and your golden!

I just took my Russian SKS (which I had never fired before) up north last week and fired off at least 400 rounds of corrosive surplus ammo. It got so hot the handguard was hot to the touch. I didn't clean it until 5 days later when I got back. I expected to see severe rusting/corrosion on it. Well... it was dirty...but......no corrosion. I took it appart and used Hoppes #9. It was grey and greasy but no rust. Gas piston was dirty ,for sure, but otherwise it wasn't all that bad. Just gave it a good cleaning and sprayed som rem oil on/in it. Are these threads of "clean it immediately or else" just some hype"?

Do you live in a very humid climate? I use Mpro7 almost exclusively and it has never caused rust. It is not an inhibitor but does not promote rust either (the cleaner that is). The copper remover must soak longer than the bottle states then you must use a brush. Doing that works well but you can't just patch your copper out like you can with other copper solvents.

Leave it in your bore for an hour after shooting corrosive & see what happens. Boiling water has the advantage of evaporating quickly, mpro, not so much. Might be ok in a mint bore but for a more "seasoned" milsurp, I avoid it like the plague. The mpro copper remover doesn't seem to do much either.

Nope but that rifle did not have a chrome bore either. Didn't find it cleaned that well either but what ever works for you. Wd40 cleans fairly well but does not offer long term protection against rust.
