I don't particularity look forward to repeatedly removing the pistol grip on my Tapco stock in order to remove the trigger group for cleaning. (screw and plastic threads)

So my question is, would it be acceptable to remove and clean only the bolt, carrier and the front and rear gas system when cleaning? I would also clean the receiver, but the stock would still be attached since the trigger group would still be installed. Maybe remove the trigger and stock every four or five cleanings?

It works for me. I just put the oil right to the trigger group after she's had a hot rinse.
Last time I checked the trigger group all was well.

But that's just me..........others will chime in shortly.
Welcome, by the way :)

I got cheated with the lever arms "non corrosive" ammo, so i'm just going by where i saw rust forming when i caught it. Other than the obvious (gas system, bolt/carrier) i found a bit of rust around the front of the chamber and on the front edge of the magwell, so a wet wipe, maybe a small spray bottle would be helpful, didn't notice anything on the trigger group and back end of the magwell or in the chamber beyond the front inch, but YMMV.

I just Tapco'd my SKS recently and have been wondering the same thing.
I plan on not removing the trigger group for cleaning except maybe once a year.
Spray some G96 in there and hope that'll do it!

Thanks guys. Glad I'm not the only one contemplating this.
On a side note, I have some pics of my two SKS' in the Red Rifles forum if interested.

same here only remove it once in a blue moon no issues and im on my second crate of surplus!

No corrosion on my Tapco stock SKS after 2 years. I was thinking of putting a threaded rivet into the hole.
Good to hear. Also, I will have to watch that I don't get any solvent on the Tapco stock when cleaning the receiver while it's still in the stock. I've heard plastics and solvents don't mix well...lol

I use ballistol and water with my VZ58, I plan to do the same with my future sks. Water helps oil get everywhere and oil remains after the water evaporates.

Only one retailer in Canada but the product is worth it.

I removed little bit of material from inside the pistol grip, just enough so the trigger group can come out a little, that allows the receiver to pop up and out. Now I can disassemble without removing pistol grip, I use a long Philips screw driver to push on the tab. But as others said you don't have to, I just do it everytime, just because I can.

Thanks man, I did notice a second hole inside my pistol grip that appeared to give exposure to the trigger group release tab. I tried depressing it, but it would not give way. Not able to get enough leverage due to the limited space, I think.

Anyone else with a Tapco got that secondary hole next to the pistol grip's bolt attachment?

taking the trigger group out is soo easy, even if you have to undo ONE bolt ont he tapco stock. i do it everytime i shoot. barely adds anytime at all.... but i guess im fanatic on my cleaning. a clean rifle is a happy rifle IMO. to each his own though. whatever works for you.
