Hi Folks,

Want to get the old girl ready to dance on Sunday (trying out the new parts upgrades) and having put north of 400 rounds through her already I figure it's time to get the crud out of the gas system. I've got her stripped down for installing a new op-rod spring & spring guide and I'll be swapping out the rear sight assembly. I have the set of drill bits, I got the wrench, I got everything mostly apart but the <bleep!>ing bayonet lug means I can't get the piston out. Short of removing the front sight/flashhider assembly, anyone got any tips? to get the piston and/or crud out?

Waiting with baited breath and surfing the youtube for help, with a disassembled rifle looking balefully over my shoulder....

Thanks,
-DF

This issue comes up here every week or so. Simply unscrew and turn the gas lock to the side then remove the piston, which usually works perfectly. If you need more clearance (unusual), completely unscrew the gas lock until it swings free and slide the gas cylinder forward until you can swing it to one side, allowing the piston to clear the bayonet lug.

Thanks Guys,

I cleaned as best I could with the piston still in and it passes the tilt test, so I'll try the full out removal as above the next time I do a gas strip down. Maybe I'll shoot some stills and some kind mod can add it to the tips & tricks sticky above.

Cheers,

Great idea, this should be a sticky - the procedure is not always obvious on first attempt. It is a tight squeeze, but once the gas lock is rotated 1/4 turn, the piston will usually slip right out. if not, go to step 2.

Use a hacksaw and file to remove the bayonet lug...

Gotta love a gun that you work on with a hammer and hacksaw and clean with drill bits ;)

I just saw the tutorial about cleaning the gas system. Finally a use for my old machinist drills!

Finally starting to have some fun with my norc. Last night I found loads with 2 different powders that gave me about 1.5MOA with cast bullets. Awesome for a gun I've done little to beyond hitting it with a hammer - LOL
