Bought a gallon of concentrated simple green, advertised to use with pressure hose, this weekend to clean an out of the box m14, i was reading the numerous stickies and i'm not quite sure how to use it...

first off, i have no idea what concentration i'll need... one part water one part simple green? or 100% concetrated?

then do i rub the parts with it or do dip them into it? if so how long?

thanks in advance

EDIT: see post 42, page 5

I guess id doesn't really matter if it is concentrated or not, but...

With my two M14 I used palmolive with very hot water, also used some brake cleaner and it worked very well. So you could use simple green instead of the soap I used, use it in quantity it will help you cut through the "blessed goo of pestilence"

Don't forget to run a few patches down the bore while you're cleaning, the hot water along with the simple green will make short work of the cosmo in it. Don't forget to degrease the mags too!

Once the cleaning complete, oil and grease where appropriate, reassemble and head for the range !

best method ive used is removing the wood stock and dumping it into the varsol tank at work... less than 5 min later its 100% clean. wash it off in hot water, blow it dry, oil and your good to go.

sure beats scrubbing with a tooth brush and simple green

yeah but i got a gallon of concentrated simple green, i could make a sort of tank with a lets say 80% solution...

hot water is the key.we have an UltraSonic Bath here at the small arms section on base and i can run it with very little mild alkaline based cleaner as long as i let the water get good and hot.

Why do M14s need to be washed out of the box? I ordered one in November and I am awaiting the shipment. I am not clear, however, why they need to be cleaned? Are they too greasy out of the box? What am I missing here?

They are completely covered with a thick, sticky, viscous preservative like cosmoline.

I suppose you cannot really shoot it out of the box without washing it out first, eh? I have a couple of liters of kerosene and a compressor with engine washing attachement. I clean my guns this way when they get really dirty. Would pressurized kerosene get that factory stuff off?

All the methods work but I would suggest getting an old cloth and physically removing the thicker deposits manually before soaking. This will speed up the cleaning / washing stage later.

Hot water is a great asset here as it speeds the removal of the grease. Dissassemble the rifle and if you do not have access to a tank of sorts use the laundry sink. Put 4-5 inches of solution in the bottom them use a cheap paint brush to wash / scrub the rifle. This will help to get the grease out of the small crevices. Then rinse with hot water and repeat. When the solution gets dirty change it out... notice I did not say let it go down the drain.Hope this helps.

Regards,

To oil my guns, I use Amsoil synthetic automatic transmission fluid. Stinks as hell so better do it in a garage or some ventilated area. My wife gave me *$#@ for doing this in my basement but at least I feel good that my guns are well oiled.

what i did is i used the inside foam part of the norc M14 box to put the gun in filled with simple green, it worked out great!

for the stock it's going to clean up real good but the dishwasher is still the best way!

for everything else just fill the foam box with SP and let it stock, just make sure you oil and grease everything well after!

How do you do this dishwasher cleaning?
Do you put the whole thing in? plus wood?
Do you tear it right down?
Do you use a certain detergent?
and is this best done when the wife is out shopping?:50cal:

I can't believe that you guys would put anything from an m14 near anything you would eat.

I cleaned a half dozen of them last year with soap and hot water. Really simple, really fast. boil water and dump. leave sit for half an hour, and drain. Repeat until you are tired of it.

After that, if there is anything bothering you, some foaming bore cleaner will fix it up.

Just the CHU wood stock. The only metal that went in the washer with the stock was the inner frame (don't know the correct term). The butt plate and scews come off too.
