Cleaning your handguns

After each range trip, and regularly for amusement. I inspect my firearms weekly at least when not in use, mostly as an excuse to fondle them. Same as my wife's breasts.

So no one has put an extensive amount of rounds through there pistols? All I am waiting for is a failure to feed and I will clean it. So far the thing is running like a champ. Don't get me wrong though.... this is not a sign of how his brothers and sisters are treated. I do have to clean some of them randomly... I have pistols I haven't shot in over a year.

Your pistol is going to wear parts faster and fail when you neglect it like that. Yes its nice to see how long it will run until it fails, but its your investiment.

I clean mine after every range trip and it runs like a clock and looks the same as the day I bought.

Do you run your car until it dies on the side of the road or do you tune it and maintain it once and a while?

Exactly.

I used Remington UMC for the first time and felt obligated to clean it as soon as I got home. My Shadow looked like it was spraypainted grey.

If my car cost me $1250 I would. I have 6 other basically identical pistols. I don't plan to sell them. Its an addiction. Once I bought my first one I wanted to buy them all...

I like to clean my guns after every range trip. I'll do a more detailed cleaning after around 500 rounds.

I know some people who don't clean their guns at all or very seldom. They seem to think that they're guns will run dirty for a while. Only when there's a malfunction will they consider cleaning it. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Ahaha, glad I wasn't the only one thinking it. Just don't buy my CZ75 SP-01... I beat the s**t out of it. Everything else I sell is good.

Don't buy a Kimber from me. Apparently its no good any more. :onCrack:
According to Kimber...
SPRING REPLACEMENT CHART
Compact & Pro Models:
Recoil Spring: .45 ACP & 40 S&W/22 lbs., .38 Super/18 lbs.
CHANGE EVERY 800 rounds.
Firing Pin Spring: HD, CHANGE EVERY 5000 rounds.
Mainspring: 23 lbs., CHANGE EVERY 5000 rounds.
I am ready for a full spring replacement....
And my warranty has been void since the first shot...

"The use of reloaded, “remanufactured”, handloaded or other non-standard ammunition voids all warranties. Reloading is a science and improperly loaded ammunition can be extremely dangerous. Severe damage to the firearm and serious injury to the shooter or to others may result."

Damn... Straight from Kimber again...
The key is moderation. Not enough oil and your
gun may not function properly and lead to undo
wear. Too much oil and you risk attracting damaging
dirt and debris to the bearing surfaces causing
undo wear and potential functioning problems. All
metal parts even Stainless Steel should be lightly
lubricated because
RUST IS NEGLECT!
Seams like I am damned if I do and Damned if I dont!!!

nobody is saying bath your kimber in oil. Its simple to clean the barrel and slide after every use. Get it right. Even Hickok45 cleans his guns after every range use, he said so in a recent video.

Those recommendations on replacement at a specified round count is more so for duty use or similar where your life depends on the handgun. Just like a car has a routine maintenance schedule recommendation - you can ignore it and it will run fine. For example all manuals say do a transmission fluid flush....very few people do if there car is under warranty.

I clean after every range visit time permitting.

I have a friend who has run 40,000 Jacketed 9mm through his Glock17 without issue and continues to fire freely.

Used to clean after every trip. Then recently I fired 200-250 rds a week and didn't clean for a good 4 weeks. Took it apart before the 5 th time,(glock,,its easy) and it was pretty cruddy with some metal filings. Gave her a good wipe and a quick lube with a 1 step solvent/lube combo and fired a good 300 that day. I just took part 1 of a BB course so I gave it a good cleaning the night before.

I have yet to clean my glock since I got it... I dont waste my time cleaning my guns... Do you take apart your engine every time you start your car ? I think not...

I had to clean my GSG 1911 when it started to act up... all I did is spray it down with carb cleaner...

Ha no but you must change the oil in your car every ###xkm's right!?

I wouldn't worry about cleaning the Glock, this way when it malfunctions it can be chalked up to "improper maintenance" and one more post can be made on CGN "i have ###xx rounds thru my Glock..... no issues..." :stirthepot2::stirthepot2::stirthepot2:

Ha OP the only pistol i shot til i had issues for fun was my Norinco M93 22LR. At about 700 rounds with no clean i had feeding problems. Ha it was so fouled and dirty etc!! Ha the 22LR ammo lol. Have a couple 9mm pistols i might have ran the same without cleaning but didnt have any real issues......

Aside from that i like to try and clean my decent pistols fairly regularily.....
