I'm thinking about getting a climbing treestand. So I'm wondering how many of you guys use them and what to look for or stay away from? Any recommendations would also be appreciated.

When I first got into archery, I thought I'd get one. For the benefit of quick changes in choices of location and trees, I thought I'd get a self climber. I didn't and don't have any experience in what's the best possible choice so I went by the recommendations of a friend that's an accomplished bow hunter. At his suggestion I got a Grand Slam Supreme, model GS 2500MS made by API Outdoors. Again, I don't have experience with other products to compare it to but it does appear to be well made, light, strong, user friendly and can be packed to site like a backpack. Comes with a safety or fall arrest harness, USE IT!!

I have a summit viper ( climber) and think the viper is of a really good quality , comfortable, stable .

X 2 on the harness use it !!, they all come with one pretty much

Don't think about it...just do it!! No other piece of equipment boosted my success rate more than a climber. The difference was night and day,

I have an API "bowhunter", but I'm thinking about getting a Lone Wolf "sit and climb".

Like the other guys said....PLEASE use the safety harness.

I have a Lonewolf Alfa sit and climb, and two different Summit stands (Titan, and Goliath SS). If I am going to spend any length of time in the stand I use a Summit. For a quick set up, and short stint in stand I take the Lonewolf.

Some argue that "mine is quieter so it is better". I have yet to have an issue with either brand, not one deer I seen from any of these stands knew I was there.

P.S... I have had some of my best sleeps at camp in a Summit.

Buy the lonewolf sit and climb, it's a great stand, very lite and simple to use.
I had the hand climber lone wolf but realy didn't like the way it climbed, the sit and climb suited me better. Again, use that harness, it's hard to put a arrow into a big buck with a broken neck.

I have a summit razor, the front bar folds down which keeps it away from the lower limb of your bow. This is handy if your shooting close to your tree, like 10 -15 yards out.

As mentioned by another poster, I have a summit for long stays in relative comfort. For days that I conditions suggest I might have to change the set up with say the wind, I go with the lonewolf. On my first couple of days, I use a tree saddle as I check out the area. In the end, it is all about the type of trees you have in your area.

lone wolf, light, slim, quiet, strong

All true........What isn't there, is comforatable for an extended period.

I know because i have both the Lone Wolf Alfa, and two Summits. The Summits are by far more comfortable. Where I do like the Lone Wolf, is for a quick set up, where I am only going to sit for a short time. Also nice where I plan on moving often.

The quiet factor isn't a factor at all. No deer that I have seen from any of these stands knew I was there. The older steel climbers I have owned are another story.

So the consensus seems to be summit or lone wolf. I'm assuming these are made of aluminum? What's the dissadvantage of steel? too heavy, noisy, rust? The reason I'm asking is there is one for sale on Kijiji, he doesn't say what model, but it looks to be steel, there is some "brown" around the joints and holes, is this a "stay away" type of deal or is it worth persuing? Thanks for all the help so far.

Another vote for the Lone Wolf Sit n Climb. After trying several cheaper stands, I finally bit the bullet and bought the Lone Wolf. Well worth the extra funds. Light, packs down nice and flat to carry on your back. The one thing I like the most is you can unpack it, put it on a tree and climb and not make a sound.

And I'll repeat it again, always wear your safety harness. If you don't like fumbling around with tangled mess of a harness they give you with the tree stand, go out and spend a the extra bucks on a Hunter Safety System harness of something similar. After all, how much money is your life worth?

There are 2 types of tree stand hunters, those who have fallen, and those who are going to fall.

I have a Summit, it really bites into trees well. I feel safer in the Summit than a hang on and they are very comfortable. Worth the extra money IMHO.

I have 2 summits. Viper and the Bullet Backpacker. Pretty well the same stand except the backpacker folds flat but weighs an extra pound. I love the comfort of both.
