Close call

At 34 seconds the guide/PH can't open the action on his rifle which could be one of the reasons the client got mauled . Better call Saul .

So I would like to ask a question without sounding like a jerk or starting a war. It appears in the video that the one guy is having a very difficult time opening the action on his rifle? You can see him pounding on the bolt with the back of his fist. I never did see him successfully open the action.

For me, even simply having a difficult time cycling the action would spell the end of that rifle. They just lived through a life and death situation and that rifle failed to function in my opinion. Rifle and ammo deserve a very close inspection by a qualified gunsmith. Or scrap the rifle entirely.

Indeed. For me, all equipment would need to be verified to be trustworthy for such an instance. I've had some ammo/brass that shoots fine but are sometimes a ##### to extract like S&B brass. Then again, any gun can fail at any time. There were at least 4 rifles in that video and the guide had a pistol on top of that. Seems like a whole lot of muzzle flagging going on. Rifle malfunction and lion still kicking, you can bet I'd drop that rifle and unholster that pistol in a hurry. Again, just armchair QB here. :p

Pretty deep bite in a bad place, but just missed his neck, could have been a lot worse for him. He lost close to a pint of blood in the time the video was shot, should keep pressure on both bite holes..

There are a ton of rifles in service that don't work properly. Most don't know it or don't care.

Is it possible some of the blood on his shirt was from the lion? I'm assuming it was injured already for it to bum rush a group of people. Or would a lion being stalked attack like that without being wounded?

I would suspect if you are seriously hurt in a third world sh!t hole like this, you are going to die, is it worth the risk.

Bullet failure could be to blame? There was a lawsuit filed against the Federal Cartridge Co. by a PH who was mauled by a wounded lion after he shot it using Federal ammo.

That guy's a goof. Sues Federal with 0 pictures or any other evidence other than statements from people in his hunting party.
Why the heck, if he'd already dispatched 100+ lions, would he switch bullets to something he'd never used before??

A lion certainly will sometimes attack a hunter who gets too close. Not all of them run away. No previous injury necessary. That's one of the reasons they are dangerous game.

They were on the walkie calling for the medi-vac helicopter. It's a question of how soon it would get there. Private insurance over there can still buy you good hospital care and they do have some of the best trained doctors in the world in South Africa, plus in a country where you see a lot of trauma, the doctors know what they do.

I had that happen with a rifle chambered in 22-250 years ago. I had bought a case of factory ammo and it cycled perfectly.....unfired!! Fire it and every piece of brass stuck in the chamber like cement!! After a few tries I returned the ammo to the store I bought it. I can't recall the brand but it was something European. Never an issue running American made brands. I will never buy anything but ever again. That Lion did some major damage in no time at all. Thankfully there was more backup than the PH with his jamming POS or it may have been Lion 2 - Hunters 0!!!
