Closest call I've ever seen...

Just questioning if all of them had 12guage guns with 3" 00 or 000 buckshot would the lion get put down sooner? Seams they all missed except the guy being charged made the kill shot? Understandably lions are tough beasts, but 3 or 4 guns can spray a hell of alot of led.

The answer, according to this article, is NO!

The article is titled "Buckshot and Cats Don't Mix Well!"; one of the important quotes: "DO NOT USE A SHOTGUN ON CATS!"

They may well have hit but the last guy brained it.
I have never shot a lion but have worked with them doing radio telemetry and translocations. A big male is an awesome beast! They are not bullet proof but unless hot well the first time they can soak up bullets. having said that I did work for guy who killed one in a charge with a .270...only because his tracker ran away with his .458. Buckshot would be a very poor choice unless the lion was right off the barrel - and then a bullet or slug would still be superior to a mass of round pellets. The debate sometimes rages about buck shot at wounded leopard, which are 160lbs. A 450lbs pissed off super cat is no place for buckshot!
