Closest place to hunt in Vancouver/Lower Mainland area? Grouse run?

I've got some city-boy friends in Vancouver that would like to "go hunting" but aren't committed enough to take a week off work and drive 7 hours north yet.

Where is the closest place to Vancouver we could go for a weekend long, one or two sleep hunt?

I'm thinking Squamish area or past Hatzic lake up Sylvester road in Mission may be an option? Chili-whack? I know that Burke mountain in Poco had a bow season for deer at one point, but I would rather use a rifle. Even somewhere we could smack some grouse would be a great first trip. It doesn't even need to be open for deer, I just want to get them out in the bush.

Sorry, I don't have the regs book yet so I was hoping for some local know-how on what is open for grouse and when.

PS: I would obviously make sure everyone does CORE and get's a license first. My friends are on-board with this already.

Grouse opens September 10, same as deer.

Sylvester road is a gong show of undisciplined firearms use, drinking and wheeling.

Last time I was there there was a joint RCMP, provincial and federal C.O. and even provincial park warden roadblock.

That answers my follow-up question, where is the closest place to shoot a gun that isn't a gun range. ;)

But seriously, as long as we are legally hunting with registered rifles and PALs we shouldn't fear any road blocks or game checks.

I'm open to any better suggestions? Harrison West Forrest Service Road? Anywhere in the 'Whack?

First let me tell yeah that I really encourage you. BC needs more hunters.

OK now the reality. There are oodles of spots with in an hour of downtown van where you can expect to shoot Deer, Bear, grouse, ducks and geese. In fact with in 15 mins of where you sit in maple ridge I have had some of my memorable shoots watching rush hour suckers in the backgorund.
But until you take real steps toward becoming a hunter don't expect anyone to lead you to them! Do the CORE, join a Rod and Gun Club, Study the maps, put in the mountain bike miles, get a canoe..........

This is not a good start. You'd be better off going your own way and leave them to what they are committed to. Lots of guys out there that would be happy to mentor a safe, strong backed and respectful young guy who wants to learn something.

I learned to hunt the Lower Mainland in the company of a stone deaf Browning Auto 5 artist who I met through the Richmond RandG club. It was tough to coordinate on the phone he'd just call and yell where to meet him LOL. I was alway there!

Mike if your still out there thanks, I still can't shoot worth a sh*t but am having fun.

No, you shouldn't fear them but you should question why the powers-that-be feel the need to invest so much man-power and expense in one location.

Contrary to what you may read on this and other forums not all gun owners are law-abiding Boy Scouts ............. :rolleyes:
