Closest thing to AK47 in Canaduh?

A few years ago (90-95) there was one called a MAK-90 (Modified AK 1990) made by Norinco. These were restricted IIRC.
Yes, all AKs were restricted for a short time before they became prohibited. The MAK is just a Type 56 that was "sporterized" for the US market after one of their numerous incremental bans. By all accounts it is one of the finest AKs ever made. Smooth trigger and thicker AK-47 style barrels (AKM barrels are thinner) as well as a 1.5mm receiver (most AKMs are 1mm) makes for an excellent shooter.

And we get a better gun in the 858 yet we still yearn for that which we cannot have. How amusing.

Just the way it is I guess, there are lots of mediocre guns that I would love to own, even if they have better candidates that do the same thing, but unfortunately they are all banned.

I've seen AK rifles. Not impressed. The only two variants I would be interested in if the were legal are the Galil and Valmet M76.

Nothing beats the milled receiver and tighter tolerances of the '58.

Not to mention how much lighter they are! Those suckers handle FAST.

I don't think AKs are there to impress anyone, just be reliable workhorses more than anything which they do extremely well. And admittedly, the AK has unmistakable "### appeal" over the 858 in the appearance department.

WOW didn't think this thread would keep going ... interesting replies ... lots of BLAHBLAHBLAH mind you ... Let's hear about which rifles are closest in your opinion, lets see your pics of your rifles guys & gals???!!! If you have an actual AK47 you can post a pic without trying to take it out illegally correct?

valmet m78 i have one and it literally is an ak / rpk

I have checked out all these valmets and calibres they come in ... they still put a ugly hunting type stock on them ... I want one that has the wood pistol grip, buttstock and front handguard.

The AK can also have historical significance. We have immigrants from all over the world and some have used it in battle or have had relatives who did. A Cuban immigrant might have used one to defend his country from the Bay of Pigs invasion, or a Russian immigrant might have used the 74 model to fight the Taliban, for example. I'll probably go with the 58 eventually, but the SKS will tide me over for now until I make some other firearm acquisitions, EZ9's next for sure ;)

i had a mak 90 in the early 90's. it was made in romania and had a thumbhole stock. mine also had a drum mag. back in the day it was $575 and back then that was alot of money. i sold just before all of the stupid laws of the mid 90's came into effect.

I'd go with the cz/vz. Or wait for the type 81. I won't buy a type 81 but am interested in the QBZ-03.
Just did a bit of reading on it.. So the Chinese decided to go with the conventional rifle design due to some complaints from their forces and pumped out the 03..

Interesting rifle, as long as they address the easy convertibility to full auto issue (assuming it's real) and as long as it's not seen as an AK variant (quite possible).

With that being said, it better be dirt-cheap or I'll just go with an 858.

I think someone's working on it, TI comes to mind. A quick glance at crude internet photos shows that it is rather far removed from the AK platform; looks a lot closer to the Swissarms rifles in fact.

As far as price is concerned, TI is bringing in the Type 81 at the princely sum of ~$1,200 CAD and that's essentially a glorified SKS-D. I'd expect QBZ-03s to retail for what every other non-restricted black rifle seems to go for these days, $2,500-$3,000. Is it worth that? Hell no. Will people pay it? Yep.

you all seem to be forgetting that the type 81 is chrome lined, and a new red rifle to add to your happy red rifle family.

If they land here I would love to have one. But I have a feeling the chrome lined 858s will be getting here sooner.

Chrome lining means little to most people, and my SKSs are chrome lined and significantly cheaper. What you're forgetting is the Type 81 has a factory 17.5" barrel. Unless new barrels are made it will be restricted, and there's a very good chance new barrels would NOT be chrome lined.

I really want to see the Type 81 get here and I would love to have one in my collection. However I can put an ATI side folder and 30-round duckbill on my Norinco SKS and be at the same functionality and appearance, for less than a third of the cost. Even for someone as into these guns as myself I'm going to find it difficult swallowing four figures for the Type 81, or any other Chinese rifle for that matter.

Yeah, most SKS' are chrome lined and that may even cause accuracy issues. If I get a nice rifle like the 858, I'll pay the extra 10c/rd and get non-corrosive, so I get better accuracy and no cleanup headaches.

Wow been almost a year since the last post in my thread. touch157 your picture doesn't show up???
