So this morning while visiting an old friend , he asked if I was interested in his old 30-06.
He has now lost sight in his right eye & can not aim. Getting old sucks.
He pulls out this 1903 Springfield that still has gobs of packing grease in the action, bolt ,ect.
He was thinking of tossing it on the burn pile just to get rid of it !
Just another example how our Gov. has people afraid of all the firearms hassle ect.
Now shame me if you must , but this is just not my thing , so I wasn't going to make him an offer & then store it away OR flip it for profit.
I know it is worth too much for me right now & someone would love to add it to their collection.
How Much ? is my question ,not my field of expertise.
I have the gun & would like to get him a decent dollar as a surprise as he is very dear to me.
I took several pics , the bore ,as you might guess is mirror shiny .Cleaning kit is gone...just a spare cartridge.
Two chips from the stock . I did Not clean the grease out as this can be someone else s 'Garage Find' ,if you will.

Need more info. Does the number on the bolt match the action? What's the serial number? And what is the date on the barrel behind the front site?

1903 bolts are not serialized.

What make is the receiver? Also, what is the serial range? We need to ensure it's not an early number receiver.

SN 15067XX , front sight bbl markings : USMC 9-42
the only # I see on the bolt is a 1 under the bolt handle..?
the stock has 2 stamping s : RRA & C-SSA

Funny, forgot that. And I have 2 of them currently, and have owned a number of others. Nice thing about getting older, you learn new things every day. Bad thing is it was stuff you used to know, lol.

I sold a NRA target style 1903 at the Switzer's Auction last month for $1100. Not original. Original always commands a higher price.

"US NRA target rifle, one scope base installed, Vaver brand aperture rear sight, no USGI back sight, Redfield aperture front sight, checkered buttplate, lengthened buttstock, varnished stock"

Op your doing the right thing ... hats off to ya

Thank you . I cringe at the destruction of firearms. Someone will love this one , & my friend deserves appropriate value.
I believe we all need to have integrity to have any self-worth .

I have been getting offers but still don't know the real value here....

The serial number puts your friends rifle receiver made during 1937 Serial number range (1496023 ‑ 1510387)
Re barreled with a USMC 9-42 (Sept 1942) and most like put into the "C" stock

Looks like the rifle has been arseneled twice or inspected after re-barreling/inspection. RRA is Red River Arsenal, C-SSA San Antonio Arsenal WWII.

Value with what looks like a very good + bore, $900 to $1200 to the right person.

Thanks to all for your input & info. I was pleasantly surprised at the interest & how fast it sold . ( wish he had a crate of them ..lol )
He will be sooo shocked when I give him his $$ . I will offer him $250 , and then keep laying out the hundreds , should be fun.
Thanks again , Ed
