My wife and I have often discussed getting our PALs and a couple of .22's for fun & education. Neither of us grew up with a lot of exposure to firearms, but both held an interest and thought it would be a great hobby to share together, and in time with our children. To that end we are signed up for the non-restricted safety course in November at Buckeye in Uxbridge.

I have to say that the lack of reasonably local ranges has really been a damper on the enthusiasm for us.

I hear you. Gun sports are a great hobby, they get you outdoors, a good family as well as social activity. You can do them at any age. And, by way, far safer than any other sports you can name. That's why insurance is so cheap.

Two things, though. First, handguns are, for many people, the most fun of the shooting sports, especially if you get into IPSC or other action shooting sports. I started out with trap and rifle, but now I'm almost only handgun.

Second, the lack of facilities is an intentional gambit of the gun banners. Every time someone gives up on a restricted PAL because of this, they notch a win. I realize time and access are a hassle, but still...
