Can someone explain the scale on the Enfield rear CMk3 sight? I gather it is for flock shooting but just for curiosity I would like to understand the scale.thanks

I don't want to sound stupid, but what the hell is "flock shooting"?

I am assuming the long range sights were for shooting at a group of the enemy, not one particular soldier.shoot into the flock and you are bound to hit something.

The pic is marked with the phrase "yds" on all of the No.4 sights shown, which means YARDS....

Incidentally, the calibrations will give approximately correct elevations only if the rifle has been properly zeroed, and standard Mk. VII ammunition is used. A decent No. 4 rifle can produce useful groups at longer ranges, but it is a bit much to expect that the the elevations will be exact.

OK, so the 9 would mean 900 yds ,13 would mean 1300yds ect?

Yes. In use, the rifle would first be zeroed on a 30 yds range, with the slide set at 200. The front sight would be changed until the group fell in the correct spot, and was centred for windage. I have fired a No. 4 to 500 with the CMk. 3 sight, and to 900 with a PH5C target sight. The comeups on the CMk. 3 will give an approximation at longer ranges, but some holdoff is likely going to be necessary.
