I wonder if anyone's heard of the Civilian Marksmanship Program in the US. It seems like a great way to propagate the sport of shooting through the heritage of military arms and to have a pool of civilians that the country can draw upon in times of emergency.

Is there anything like this in Canada?

the closest thing to CMP in canada is Hungry's Service rifle matches...:D

Unfortunately for us canadian shooters, i cant see any government (present or future) encouraging civilians to use M1A's and AR15's .

I think right into the 60's, many high schools had cadet corps etc. (before my time)
Long gone...that was probably the closest we came to the CMP idea here.

Hey, if I was running the country...I'd turn us into Switzerland. Everyone in the militia to defend the country.

Yeah, I remember when I was in Army cadets as a kid and they let us use.... shudder.... REAL .22 RIFLES!!

Scouts too. I can remember going out on weekends and "competing" against other troops. Occasionally the big people would bring out the big stuff and let us play. I can remember having to ask my folks to sign a form - they didn't even blink.

Amazing how times change.

Yes, guys, things have changed a lot.

When I started shooting, you could swap your .303 brass for fresh rounds with the TQMSM and go out to the range on Sundays with the DCRA guys. It was considered completely normal.

Ten years later I was in University and we got a challenge for a (shock!) .22 match from an American university. Brandon University didn't have 75 cents for a box of .22 shells, but they did have enough spare change to charter a flipping JET and fly the Cheerleaders, a bunch of Fans and the FOOTBALL TEAM with all their hangers-on to a game only 230 miles away.

Of course, that was in the most politically-correct Left-wing university in the country. Travelling Marxists were welcome at all times, cash dollars handed out for 'relief' for the poor, downtrodden masses who wanted to get rid of their MG-34s and get RPKs and anybody slightly to the right of Stalin was classed as a 'fascist'.

I'm STILL trying to figure out what happened to my country in those 10 years I wasted working and paying taxes.

I'm all for the Switzerland idea...... and if you don't do your time, you don't VOTE. Anyone who is not willing to DEFEND his home has no moral right to decide how it should be RUN.

THEN we'll have a CMP.

BTW, run on down to your local second-hand bookstore and pick up a copy of Robert A. Heinlein's "Starship Troopers".

Don't waste your time or money on the movie; they only used 20 pages out of a 200-page book, turned the whole thing into an ugly shoot-'em-up after it was disembrained and lobotomised.

The book has a lot of good writing in it and a lot of good ideas. And it's a fun read, too. It has been translated into at least 16 languages and it has sold 20,000,000 copies and it has NEVER had a good review, so you KNOW there's something good about it.

Another one to make you think more than just a bit is Nevil Shute's "In The Wet", which contains some of the best ideas I've heard on making democracy relevant again. Too darned bad this one is fiction!

there used to be a program called "dominion marksmen" - i still have one of the shoulder flashes- but i think it was phased out when PEARSON came into power
update- it was an AIR CADET marksmanship program- sorry, guys-the badges and flashes can all be seen on the dominion marksman web page-

Could we see a couple of digital photos of the shoulder flashes? You can email them to me if you want me to post em up.

i'll see if i can come across it- i believe my dad may have it in his effects
but don't hold your breath- seems to me the parent organisation was called dominion of canada rifle association, and the ammo was supplied by cil - that was back in the day when companies used t give away things for free- how to books, etc

I did that 30 yrs ago ..... and I've worn out 4 copies of it since !!!

I thought the DCRA was the equivalent of the DCM (Sorta), in the past (Kinda).

Dominion Marksmen, I always thought, was a program put out by the Dominion Ammunition division of CIL. It died with the sale of the old DCCo factory to the Liberal-anointed IVI.

We had their program in Cadets, I remember and at the MRSA that I shot with out in BC. You started Prone and shot for the Bronze, Silver and Gold in turn, which were just cute little lapel pins. After that, there were sew-on awards for Standing, Sitting and so forth and there were awards for Revolver as well. You were supposed to use CIL ammo to qualify, not that that was any drawback: the stuff was GOOD.

Funny, though, I shot for the whole set of pins three times (twice with Number 7, once with DSM-34), never did get my damn pins! I'll pick up a set at the next gun show, if any show up. Be nice to be able to say that I HAVE something that ain't the virus of the week!

It was a good program.

Nope. Our government's policy is to destroy all surplus CF firearms. No selling to Throd World countries either.
Most of the old C1A1's, C2's and Cadet Corps No. 4's and No. 7 Lee-Enfields were chopped, long ago. Any left over C1/C2 parts were sold to Gunparts, Stateside. A fine example of Liberal fiscal irresponsibility.
A few Lee-Enfields were DP'd for Cadet Corp flag parties though.
The DCRA is the closest thing we have to the CMP's shooting programs.
