CO2 Pistol for Small Game?

If you are set on CO2, get a crosman 2240 and mod it to just under 500FPS shooting a 14gr. 22 pellet.....mods are easy and cheap, and a 22 cal pellet at 500FPS is plenty for head shots.

WW

I recommend going this route, but you have to practice a lot to be good with it. Modding it is a bonus but not necessary. Stoning the trigger goes a long way with these if you are handy, it is easy to do and there are lots of articles around about how to do it. This is the most modified pellet gun out there right now. Certainly enough power for grouse at short range or rabbit if you make a good shot. If you hit a rabbit they are often wounded and you have to rush them and finish them off. It isn't something that should be taken lightly - you have to be able to make a really good shot and be prepared to move in very quickly to finish them off with your hands.

If you keep it in a shoulder holster under your jacket it keeps it warm and handy. I know that it is legal, but I bet there are guys on here that would want to debate that point.

Ummm,
Isn't it illegal to hunt with anything less than a 12" barell?

not with a under 500 fps air gun

ive droped squirrels with my 1377 up to 10 yards with a hart/lung shot

i use solid pellets crosman pointed do the job nice with anything under 500fps hollow points dont do well as thay dont penetrate enough nd pellet lead is soft so even soild pellets expand a bit but with under 500fps you want more penetration

i would not go CO2 my self id go for multi pump the 1377 or the crosman backpacker witch is both a pistol and carbine

under 500fps rifles seem to hit softeer then the pistols or atleast the 1377

You sure about that? because it is not a firearm if it is under 500fps

Not really actually. But i don't need a CO to drag me in for something silly that he or she has not seen before...So I want to avoid the issue of a loaded 'firearm' on my person while driving a quad.

We drive unloaded with all the other real firearms anyhow....so we are use to reaching in a pocket for a mag.

Incidentally, i picked up a Walther CP99 with a detachable mag that contains the CO2 :) should work great.

Cheers,

I have a Webly Hurricane .177 springer and I wouldn't hesitate on a head shot on any bird. I've shot quite a few as well as squirrels (those large ontario ones). Quick and lethal every time. An interesting and modestly priced pistol would be one of those Cometas available at DL Airgun.

I picked up both the 2240 and 2289 for grouse. I got one steel breech, scope and a FTP upgrade for the backpacker which makes it a reliable grouse gun. So far I just use the 2240 for plinking but might swap breeches and add the stock to the 2240 for early fall next year. The barrels are interchangeable too but won't do that. A person has to be carefull modding the 2240 platform as it can fairly easily become RPAL.

People in BC used to use handgun air pistols for grouse, but now the CO told me it's "hunting with a handgun" so I think it's illegal :(

I'm pretty sure that's wrong. Unless your pellet pistol breaks 500fps MV, it is not considered a firearm unless it is used in a crime, then it can be considered such.

That's actually incorrect. Partly.

Correctly, it "is not considered to be a Firearm, for the purposes of", that phrase usually followed by any of a number of statutes on the books that define a firearm as being anything that propels a projectile whether by air, springs, rubber bands, explosives, or pixie dust.

Which doesn't stand in the way of that BC's regs say no Handguns, and, IIRC, they actually define a handgun as having a barrel less that some measurement, and meant to be held in one hand. That's going by a tetchy recollection. In any case, it does not get specific about whether that handgun is a firearm or not, again by memory.

An airgun may not be a Firearm, but an air pistol can still be a Handgun. Effin' convoluted. But I wouldn't carry an Air Pistol for grouse in BC without a really clear ruling on that one.

Read your regs! Mileage varies by province! Getting busted because some guy online said it was OK, is gonna still suck hard and screw up yer day out! And you'll look like a turd that didn't read his Reg's! :D

FWIW, I haven't read the BC regs in a while, so could be out to lunch on this. Read em, for your own Province!

Cheers

X2 on reading the regulations I have done that and I also phone the local C.O. office just to see if they can find anything I might have missed.
Twice once in Saskatoon and once in Grande Prairie the officer said nobody had ever asked if it was legal or not to use an airpistol for upland game birds to their knowledge . I also ask for name and number just in case you meet up with a C.O. that doesn't know and has had a bad day:nest:
Sask. Man. AB. it is legal but B.C. is not but hopefully it will change for B.C.

yeah, please use a firearm capable of a kill shot without question. I don't hunt much but out of respect for my game I make sure that if I am going to pull the trigger that there will be a kill. No suffering.

I grew up head shooting grouse with a .22 rimfire & took alot of birds with it. Since I started using the backpacker I find the head shot grouse to be just as dead.

To the op- The pump type pistols are alot quieter when fired. While there is debate whether deer would be bothered by it, quiet is nice when practicing in the basement over the winter.:ar15:

I've built and used many guns using the 2240 platform. A basic 2240 can be modified in a bewildering variety of ways . A 2240 for the use you are proposing could be constructed easily by merely installing a 10" barrel to replace the stock barrel (better sight radius and MV) and installing an after-market receiver that will allow a proper set of rear sights to be added. Without modifications to the port or valve it will stay right at the 500fps level. With 14.3gr pellets any grouse, crow or rabbit within 30-40 feet is in deep trouble if you do your part. The modifications are simple and can be reviewed over on the Canadian Airgun forum...and the required parts could also probably be obtained used (as well as the basic 2240) at the same time.

They are nice little guns for the money and the triggers can be worked to provide a crisp let off required for fairly accurate shooting. The frames are also small enough to holster quite comfortabely in a shoulder rig or on the hip.
