Does anyone use a coach gun for hunting. I am thinking of buying a side by side 20 ga. coach gun because I am usually in dense bush where I hunt and am wondering if a coach gun scatters the pellets more than a longer barrel would? Any experienced advice would be helpful, thanks.

If you are thinking about a Stoeger (or IGA whatever) coach gun, I would consider getting the 12 ga, maybe with the removable chokes. The 20 ga is barely lighter than the 12 ga (built on the same frame) and if you reload you can make 12 ga 7/8-1 oz loads (if you are concerned with meat damage) up to 3" magnums for Turkey (assuming you get the model with the screw in chokes). Would also be a good gun for pushing deer.

I had a friend who had a coachgun in 20 ga, it was a REALLY nice pointing gun, would be great for grouse, but it weighs nearly as much as a 12 ga ( a few oz's I think)

If the 20 ga was built on a true 20 ga frame that would be the gun to have (IMO if they built them on a true 20 ga frame they wouldn't be able to make enough of them), but since you are getting the 12 ga frame you might as well get 12 ga versatility.

that is the gun that I will eventually buy

I'm glad this was brought up. I've been considering doing the same thing. One thing that dispointed me though was that Stoeger doesn't bring the nickel coachgun supreme into Canada.

I have a Baikal 12 G coachgun w/ screw in chokes and functioning hammers.

I really like it for bunnies and grouse, I plan on putting a few slugs through it in the near future to check the point of impact.

I never had any problems killing game with my gun, I found that it patterns most ammo better than my 870 w/ a 26" barrel

You sure? My buddy use to have one. He used to own a gun shop as well and after speaking with the stoeger rep I was told we could get anything we want from the catalog.

Anyway, as far as hunting with a coach gun... I always wanted to, for 10 years, I thougt, what a neat gun for the bush. Guess what??? Sold it after a couple of months. They come with and I/C and a Mod if you do not get the choke tubes, which is a good combo.

My issues with it was in the swing, a short bbl' gun does not swing as well. Which is fine for shooting grouse on the ground or in a tree, or in a stagecoach hold up.

Also the trigger was terrible.

I bout a nice 26" O/U and have never looked back. If you can get you hands on one, try it side by side with a 24", 26" or even a 28" and see if the gun truly suits you.

I have owned both the 12 gauge and the 410 Stoeger SxS Coachguns and have hunted with both(including the nickel version which was bought here)......was very happy with how the hunted/shot/pointed.....

I've been toying with the idea of a 12ga coachgun, the interchangeable choke model, set up with aftermarket chokes and some kind of rifle sights for turkeys. If the barrels print reasonably close together it should be sweet.

You won't find many good experienced wingshots choosing a barrel that short for serious bird hunting. 25" is the absolute shortest in a SxS that most would consider. It's a matter of swing dynamics. You really don't gain all that much " handiness" in extra-short barrels over say good 26" tubes. If your shooting style is "poke and hope" or tends toward ground-pounding ruffed grouse, by all means get a coach gun. You can collect meat with one. For wing shooting, I use a 28" 16 ga. 1 oz of 7.5's and and skeet choke. A 12 or 20 would do as well.

If your buddy can get me one then let me know.

Stoeger Canada has their own cataloge that doesn't include all of Stoeger's US models. For example the only coach gun supreme they have is the blued version. And the only regular coach guns they carry are the blued and silverado, not even the silverado with english stock. I contacted Stoeger Canada a couple of months ago and thats what thier rep told me. I was thinking of buying a coachgun supreme with nickel barrels in the US and having questar bring it into Canada but its probably not worth the trouble.
