coach gun with slugs?????

I have a coach gun manufactured in around 1990. I dont have it in front of me now as it is at my cottage, however i was wondering if it would be ok to shoot slugs with it, seeing as the barrel seems to have a bit of a choke built right into it, anyone have any coach gun experience?????
 
If it's 12 gauge, take a dime and try to put it in the muzzle, make sure it is unloaded first, if the dime goes halfway in or more, especially all the way in, your chokes are prolly mod. or more open like I.C. or Cyl. Some folks say that you can shoot slugs with full choke anyways, but i prefer something a little more open. This dime test also work for determining constriction for steel shot compatibility. When I was much younger I would check other young folks barrels for them and ask them for a dime to use, I'd check the choke and keep the dime, no one ever asked for it back, and back then a dime was worth a dime!
 
At the time when foster slugs were originally designed, the tightest choke available was full. The main design criteria was that they needed to be safe to fire from any 12 ga. shotgun. Remington rifled slugs say right on the box that you can use a choke as tight as full safely, and anything tighter is not recommended. Ive fired them through full chokes with no issues at all, though most people find best accuracy is achieved with Imp. cyl or mod.
 
Coach guns come with assorted fixed chokes. Some a both Full, some mixed. What choke(s) your's has will be stamped on the barrel.
Slugs are ok through any choke, but better through a more open choke.
What make?
 
If you are really lucky, like I was, you will find a SxS double 12-gauge that shoots both barrels to the same point at fifty yards, producing a nice symmetrical 4-inch group with two shots from each barrel.

If you are also really stupid, like I am, you will then sell that gun and never be able to duplicate those results with any other SxS that you ever try out.

im not sure what make the coach gun is.... bought new in 1990 or so..... only has 25 shells thru it.... if that... its made in brazil..no manufacturer labels on it though.... its not a full choke.... but its not imp cyl bore either... i wish i had the sxs in front of me now so i could measure the muzzle
 
Usually the choke identification is stamped into the barrel near the chamber information. I'd just shoot slugs in and not worry provided it is made with modern steel and designed for use with nitro powders. Patterning the gun with a given brand and load will provide you with much more information than the manufacturer declaration as to the amount of choke in the barrel. As an experiment though, pattern the gun with birdshot, then fire 50 slugs through it, then pattern it again with the same birdshot load. Let us know if the pattern changes after shooting the slugs. I've heard from someone who should know about such things that shooting slugs will result in sufficient barrel wear to effect that actual amount of barrel constriction, but with conventional foster slugs I'd be surprised as the soft hollow based foster slug can compress as easily as a column of shot.

You probably have a regular Stoeger coach gun, they are made in Brazil.

One barrel has Improved Cylinder and one has Modified.
