Coach Guns 20" Barrel

Not sure where this belongs but i figured it wasn't for the hunting forum so here we go.

Looking for a 12ga 3" coach gun with a 20" barrel,decent quality.

No exposed hammers ,they seem to easy to snag when packing.

What are your recommendations?

Budget is up to $1200.Maybe a little more if required.

It will be used as a camp gun for back country motorcycle touring.

It will be carried on the bike broken down.

I have a Churchill 512 12.5" barrel at the moment,i don't like it.

It serves the purpose but It feels cheap,and i question the reliability.

The Churchill 512 is packed on the bike in the photo.

Frontier and Intersurplus usually have them. $400 or less. These are old euro guns. They're easy to cut down yourself if you have basic metal working skills. If you can find them, mini shells in 4 Buck or slug are an excellent choice for the doubles wrt recoil and muzzle blast. Ample power for whatever you need to fire at.

Yes i'm familiar with both those retailers,but i don't see anything on either site that fits the requirements.

Also i can't handle any of those guns,so i'm asking for recommendations from people who have.

I don't think cutting the barrels down is an option here in Canada.

I will be running 3" handloaded slugs.Guanlandi dgs.

I also have two Churchill 512 SxS in 28 inch and 12.5 inch. They are decent quality for Side by Side, quality wood and metal finished. They shot very good as well, I put about 500 rounds of target load on the 28 inch, not a single miss fire or anything, it shots ok for what is it, not comparable to my other two Browning BSS but they are doable for your purpose.

Pretty much any new SxS under 1k nowaday are made in Turkey, Spain and Brazil unless you want old English shotguns and cut it up which are plenty. Those Spain and Brazil shotguns are almost equal in quality of Churchill 512.
 
I have cut the barrels of 30" guns down to 20" several times. Not difficult to do a good job. I need a pro to install a new bead.

I have done the old Savage guns, Russians and German. Recoil is about the same. A bit louder. Cylinder bore, of course.

The first time it was a Russian with a damaged muzzle. Then I realized that the shorter gun was handier for many purposes.

I like this one and not expensive either 👍 single trigger and recoil pad . Shoots 2-3/4 &. 3 “ shells 👍

Go for something with a 3” chamber if you can . If it’s serious protection get serious loads . It also allows for pistol inserts , I have a kit that goes from 32acp/9mm / .357/ .44 /.410g/ 20g . . Very handy turning your shot gun into a combo

Ok after being informed otherwise it looks like some of the guns on those sites could work with shortened barrels.

Definitely an option,thanks.

Yes i was going to pick up a few insert as well.44mag 22lr.
And yes 3" is a requirement,thanks for pointing that out.

Did you see the coach guns on Intersurplus? He has two pages of them. Good guy to deal with. Or there's several hundred doubles that are cuttable. I personally avoid the Spanish guns but really like the old Sauer, Thalman, Simson etc from Germany with the cheek piece. Really nice to shoulder/ cheekweld.

Pay attention to both chamber length ( no 2.5") and lop in the description. Some of the euro guns are 13" lop up to 15 1/4". Plus you need room for a pad unless you like to shoot without. In

For flatter carry you could even look at an over/ under.

I'm not a 3" fan personally for these light guns. You won't practice enough with 3 inch.

6'2" so need a full length of pull,i don't mind adding a grind to fit recoil pad.

What gun on that site you personally would recommend?

Not many German coach guns left on Intersurplus. I like Baikal too so if I had to pick today I'd grab the one at $369. Good lop for your height probably. They're quite popular so if you don't like it you can always sell it.

Or you could pick a German double in the $350 range, consult YT and the experts here and saw it down yourself. I do mine at 18.5". See the gunsmithing forum for lots of sawing off ideas. Or pm me and I can send you a pic of the goofy jig I made.
