For strength I would say Black Powder Coating is very duarble, it is not suitable for all applications depending on the mechanism and it's clearances. The type of firearm you are coating can sometimes dictate what you can use. Knowing what you are trying to refinish would help.

The whole gun can be done except the critical fit parts like the trigger and bolt internals, it is very durable and can be had in an endless array of colors beside black. The only dowside if you want to call it that is when you do a gun with a powder coat finish or a Teflon finish for that matter there is no way to take it off except to bead blast it off. It cannot be stripped off with a chemical remover.

If powder coating, how should the metal be prepped? Smoothe, bead blasted?I have a stainless bbl. coming back from Gaillard and was going to paint it, but seeing this topic, I may decide to powder instead. Is powder even possible on stainless?

The metal is prepped and bead blasted, the finish is applied and the whole thing goes into an oven for curing, this imparts a very hard surface finish and is satin/nonreflective in texture. It can be done on SS or CM steel. The last one I had done was for a Browning Pump shotgun and it was use for duck hunting heavily the gun still looks great after a season in the marsh.
