Hi there,

I have a 700 5R which I will be using for pretty much everything - hunting, target, etc. I really like the stainless but, is there a coating that people recommend which will make it more concealable, which is durable? Dont really care about colour, black, green whatever...

I had a 700 XCR and the trinite coating it had was superb. I will be carrying this rifle for multiday trips, so a corrosion resistant coating would be great. Is there a coating similar to this?

I don't mind spending a few bucks either. It is a surperb rifle and I would rather do things proper.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Dave

If you wanna do it proper PM me and I'll send you the info for a smith locally here that applies KG Guncoat. Its a baked on coating that is virtually scratch proof after. All the metal is sandblaster and properly prepped and it looks amazing afterwords.
I've had 3 rifles done by him so far.
Anyways, my vote is for KG Guncoat.

I had one and got a friend to duracoat it. I never truly beat it up, but the coating held up great. There are other similar coatings. Maybe have a search in the gunsmithing section, if you're looking for someone to do it or diy.

edit: or there ya go, guncoat is just as good. My current rig has that, and is also good to go.

Wow that is a heavy rifle to be carrying!

You will probably spend another couple hundred on the coating, which could just buy you a Savage Edge/Axis and you don't have to worry about beating it up!

Just an idea. I would not want to be carrying that gun on a "multi day" trip!

Im thinking about removing the scope from my Marlin lever to make it lighter and easier to carry in the bush! LOL

Why do you think it's that heavy? 24" vamint contour rem in an hs stock, the US Army has been lugging roughly that config around forever.

yeah, the weight does not bother me. It really is not all that heavy, in my opinion. It's a superb rifle which is why I try and take it everywhere.

I pack it hiking through the wilderness and mountains of bc usually for 3-7 day trips. The weight is really not an issue.

Solo back to the coatings.. Guncote sounds interesting. How does it handle corrosion? Somtimes on my trips, it will rain for 3-4 days straight. Drying a rifle is not always practical. Also spend time along the coast and the salty air really has wreaked havoc on a few of my previous rifles, and handguns.

KG Guncoat is chemical resistant. You can even wipe acetone over it and it will dry off and not take the finish off. A good smith will tear it down and coat everything, even the inside of the action. The only thing that could corrode would be the uncoated parts like trigger assy and inside of barrel.
