Has anyone here KG coated/Duracoated/Armacoated/Any-Other-Coated stainless steel?
I'm thinking of picking up a rifle with a stainless barrel in the near future for the barrels other qualities, but I want the gun to be black. I've seen on some US sites that there are companies down there offering SS barrels that have been KG Guncoated.
If you have any experience with doing this, or owning one:
-what coating did you use?
-are there any special steps in the coating of the gun because the base is SS?
-how durable is the coating (same as on any other surface? Delicate? Strong?)

Thanks in advance!

Rob

I have had stainless barreled guns done in Chrome Sulphide and NP3 by Robar in the states, here in Canada I have had Electroles Nickel, hard chrome, Teflon and Powder Coating done. The Plated finishes are tougher overall but the sprayed and baked finishes are very good, the Powder Coating for all exterior surfaces and Teflon for the inner more precisely fitted parts is the way to go for durable, affordable and repeatable finishes. Try Chorlane Sport they have done some nice work for me. The Powder Coat also has the advantage in being available in a very large selection of colors, it is tough and finishes up in a satin non reflectine finish. The gun is usually stripped degreased and glassbeadded to give it a satin finish and also increase the surface area for better adhession it is then coated and baked to cure it to a hard surface, it provides a natural lubricity to the parts and is very corrosion resistant.

For KG GUNKOTE, the gun must be sandblasted and thoroughly cleaned. A pretreatment is applied to the gun and then your choice of color. The gun is then put in a suitable oven for 1 hour and voila. If it is applied correctly it is very durable. There is a wide assortment of colors available as well.

This is a stainless rifle we recently built. The metalwork and scope are coated in "titanium blue".

I did a stainless shotgun receiver using gun kote Rob. As mentioned..I blasted it , sprayed it and baked it.

Can't say about coated barrels as I have none, but a guy in Calgary does chemical blackening of stainless .
Have several rifles done this way and it is the same as cm blued for look, finish and durability.

The only way to prep stainless with any of the spray on finishes is to degrease, and sand blast with aluminum oxide to really rough up the finish. There really is no other pretreatment processes for stainless other than sandblast. We have had lots of blued recievers with stainless barrels come in to the shop to be finished in a solid color. With any of the coatings above mentioned you should be very happy.
