Coffee Can, check. Now, where to set up shop?

I forget you westerners don't have water at the bottom of every little depression

No. No. We prefer scotch or beer instead when we're a little depressed.

Water is fairly common, but you can bet it won't be right where you are when you need it :) Lots of hill work in and around the swamps, and even if there is water you might just find it's in its solid form when you go to use it. Or that your string freezes shortly thereafter.

Still - a little bottle of water solves the problem. I guess you could put anti-freeze in it :) or scotch.

I think Canadian Tire sells a type of rosin...for dressing buffing wheels . My youngest boy used a clear amber one for the final polish on a knife he made .
This rosin looks just like the type Dad used on his fiddle bow .

Rosin is used for many things - not all of its many shapes and forms will do what you want. Get the kind they put on music instruments. That's what you want.

My nefphew got me rosin in Ottawa, he got 4 different kinds  Some was cheap & some was $$$ so shop around any music store should have it. DAN>>> :D

Hmmmm!! Foxer ???

I have been making these calls for a while..1 lb. can is my favorite of course however if ya can find a pringles can they work really well and dont make a racket when they bounce around on the outside of your pack. 60" skate laces work best it aint the lenght that mattters its the technique  foxer.. yup my neigbours are really startin to wonder about me.
Love to pick up traffic cones at work and drive jobsites nuts too!!!

Hahaha - that's right, new batch this year, i forgot :) i'm sure it's quite the education for 'em :)

Pringles can's make a lot of sense - nice and thin compared to a big coffee can. Your old one sounded pretty sweet tho, with the moss in it.

just remember your friends there bud!!! we like a wee bit of credit for disurbing the peace :p or teaching it too others :!:

we like a wee bit of credit for disurbing the peace

you mean the RCMP up there hasn't already sent you something suitable for framing in recognition of your 'work' with the neighbours already?

I (ahem) was pulling the string through the hole an arms length!
All I got was a heavy breathing sound. Geeze, I can be thick.
x2 Thats what I thought I waz supposing to do too. OOPS maybe thats why there is more moose for others and less for the rest of the.............

Since you were all so helpful the first time, I thought I would impose a second. :p

I went out scouting today and found some cut blocks and marshy spots that looked promising (many beds, newer droppings and prints).
There is one little valley about 100m across on its floor that is oriented roughly north south. Wind around here typically comes from the west or north and west. The western slope has much better visibility and both sides angle up to overlook this wet grassy waterlogged area from about 20 feet. There is a two-five acre lake south and up at the top of the valley.

Where do I set up my lemonade stand? :D Upwind? Downwind of the lake or downwind of the vallley? I've got a beater canoe....any advice for it?

moose call

The coffee can moose call works good, I made one and tried it out in the house. My wife comes sprinting out of the back room and says it sounds like there is a moose dying in our back yard. She knows there are no moose on the Island but she was convinced there was one in our yard. I couldn't stop laughing for hours after

Sounds like you have found a nice little spot for moose .They could be anywhere in the area you describe , but at this time of year are most likely spending a lot of time in and around water, feeding on Lily-pad roots, etc.
When a bull comes to your call he will usually head straight to you (terrain permitting), but when he gets within 60 yds. or so , will circle down wind of where the call came from , trying to pick up the scent of the "love sick cow". When you hear/see a bull coming you should try to ambush him...ie. go downwind of your position about 40 to 60 yds. , but on an angle away from where you expect him to hold up(60 yds. down wind of where you called from) so that he will , hopefully, end up 30 yds broadside to you . This works better if you have one guy stay put and calling (not very often...just enough to keep his interest), while the other guy attempts the ambush (while the bull is quite a ways off .)
I've called in a lot of bulls that have done this(circled down wind) but then some bulls come straight to the call .
Some bulls make no(decernable) sound, others make that soft smacking grunt, a few come roaring in like a bulldozer  Have fun !

Or you could just, like, shoot the hell out of him. If opportunity presents :)

Pretty far for bow-hunting  ....but that was an assumption on my part
Hunting from a canoe can be very productive . It can be a very silent way to cruise their territory , plus you don't contaminate the area with your scent . Also a relatively easy way to haul out the quartered moose .

the wind changes all the time so try finding a spots around your area . you could have wind change or find another hunter in your spot. so always have plans A-B-C-D-E-&F cause you never know when you will need them

If your moose season goes into the colder months(-10 and colder)try using RV antifreeze on the string so it does'nt freeze  .
I found too, that the moose in my area prefer the small Tim Hortons cans
Here's what I use with success

Why RV antifreeze? is it different from regular auto antifreeze?

Ah! :) should have guessed, my bad. I thought maybe you were just reveling in the skill of bringing them as close as possible. Frankly - i could understand that too. I can totally see the thrill of talking 'em right into your personal space even if you had a rifle.
