COL for 45/70 Ruger#1

When I seat my bullets (Speer 350 fn) just to the top edge of the cannelure I
Find my col is 2.638.
Max col of 2.550 must be for lever guns, as seating the 350 to that length the bullet almost wants to fall in the case.
Does anyone have experience with this issue on their Ruger 1 in 45/70.
Any help would be great.
I have good performance with my reloads at 2.638.

One of the nice things about a single shot is that you can seat bullets so they are closer to the rifleing without having to worry about them jamming up in the mag.
 
Have you trimmed your brass. Overlength brass will result in the condition you described. Other than that, do the rounds chamber easily in the Ruger?
 
Well that is good news that my brass won't "grow".
Save me having to trim.I was curious about that as I checked
after 3 reloads and the brass measured the same,
Any idea on how many reloads I should be able to get from a case?
I load for approx 1800 fps 350grain.

I have been shooting the same bullet for years out of my Ruger #3, except quite a bit stouter load, around 2250 fps... I would gestimate some of my brass have been loaded over 15 to 20 times and I have yet to split a single casing....

BTW I can't recall the cartridge overall length I load to too, but they are on the longer side as the cannelure is well forward of the case mouth...
