I'm curious how long people are loading with this combo. I tried some at 2.240 with poor results. I might try a dummy round to see where I hit the lands, but just looking for a ballpark number that others have tried and had good results with. (SPS Varmint, if it matters)

Thanks.

I'm no expert by any means of the word, but I will share with you what I've tried and the result. I didn't take a measurment, but I did use a dummy round to find out how close to the rifling I could get and then loaded 10 with the bullets just off the rifling.

Like you, I got very poor results. I use 53 grain Hornaday or Sierra match bullets. My best results with these is when I seat the bullets so the flat base is even with the bottom of the neck.

I don't know if that is the best way, but that's what works for me.

Used a split case to determine when I was touching the lands. Longest I could go and still fit in my 223 bolt mag and feed without issues is way short of touching the lands. So nothing scientific here but a 2.280 oal gave nice tight groups, fits and feeds nice, is closer to the lands than the standard 2.260 oal but like I said nowhere near touching. Plus base seated plenty deep. Because of the way the 53gr vmax is shaped I find seating short makes it tough to pull the 53 out say when developing loads and reusing components.

Hornady superformance shot really really well im my gun so I used the col form the round I pulled from the box it was 2.244 so that is what i use and have great results with it

My Savage Axis will touch the lands at 2.43" and I load mine to 2.41" this is where i get the best groups although they are about 1" and no better. The B.C of the bullet is great and I'm going to keep working on a load for it The last load I tried today was 3" high at 100 yards and 0 at 300 yards. Did not chrono that load so I don't know how fast they are going.

First place to start is just touching and then work back from there.
