In the warmer months my savage mkII w/scope is a tack driver. Lately though i've been doing a bit of shooting during relatively cold days. I had expected a bit of a zero wandering but i've been shocked at how far out of zero it has been going in a matter of a few days. Feels like everytime i take it out in the winter I need to do major re-zeroing. Is this normal? Is it possible that it's just the scope getting bumped around or affected by the cold?

btw I usually set the zero to about 75yds

It's not your rifle, it's the ammo. The biathletes have this trouble all the time and use high end target ammo that is much more stable in low temps. I think the Lapua Biathlon ammo is considered to be very good in this respect.

I have found all the Lapua more stable in the cold.

I could just be talking out of my arse but could it be possible if the receiver, mounts, rings, and scope were made of different metals, or different grades of metal that they could be expanding and contracting at different rates. It might explain re-zeroing.... a little.

It's just a thought. I kind of doubt it because usually everything is so tight that a little contraction shouldn't do a whole lot. Experts?

I have heard of the ammo causing troubles as well. Just wondering if temp could have an effect on the optics....
