title says it all.
although i have been fascinated by firearms all my life, its only recently that i got my RPAL. I would not only like to shoot, but also collect. At the same time, if i ever have to stop shooting for a period of time due to $$ (scenario i could see happen), i don't want to have to turn in all my guns.

How do i go about it? what do i have to do? whats the exact procedure to follow to acquire that collector status?

please enlighten me.

Cheers.

Buy some books and pick a gun you want to collect and learn a lot about it. Buy all the accessories etc.. for them. That's a start...

FO: Why do you want to collect 1911s?

knitkitrd: Wow! I'm glad you asked! It's such a cool design that I've already assembled a killer collection of some of the sickest 1911 accessories you'll ever seen. Between the Wicked Punisher-skull grips and the genuine elephant trimmed TT Gunleather Snap Removable Cross Draw...Omigod! You've got to see my Mernickle Custom Wild Bunch rig. Did'ja like the Wild Bunch?

ok i have to admit it, i really just wanna be left alone if ever comes a year where for money reasons i can't renew my membership to a club. i dont PLAN on not renewing my membership, but better safe than sorry comes the day where money is tight for some unexpected reason...

do the CFOs check the club's books? Is it enough if i simply keep my ATT renewed year after year?

Forget it, i just read Law 9, it states that whenever a member of a club doesn't renew his or her membership in Quebec, the club HAS to communicate that information to the CFO.

f**kers...

funny that in Quebec we have all these dumb laws that try to stop people from getting licenses, and that we also have the highest number of valid PALs in canada....

Next time you buy a firearm (restricted) and they ask you the 'purpose'... instead of saying "target shooting" tell them it's for "collection"...

Then, get ready to be given the run-around...

- The CFO will most likely try to get you to "change" your purpose to "sport shooting"...
- The CFO will most likely tell you that they are in the process of "reviewing" their process to give out "collector" status...
- The CFO will most likely tell they can't use their old process untill the new one is approved...

If you insist (and insist on having all communication/decision/excuse commited in writing)... You'll eventually get a date for an interview (face to face or over the phone) where a CFO Staff will ask you some question about the firearm you want to aquire and why you think it's collectable and why you want to collect it.

The process shouldn't take more the 6-12 months ;) at which point (if the stars are lining up) collector status will be added to your profile.

thanks mike
now when and if that status is added to my profile, is it valid for ANY firearm i have, or only for the one i indicated i wished to collect?

One of the reasons this has to be fought since there is nothing in C-68 that makes membership mandatory.. regardless of the BS spewed by the CFO's

The only people I know who have been controlled (i.e. Security control visit at home, by the SQ) are people having the collector status. Some even ended up by seizure... of ALL their guns, with all the hassle that comes along. So, if you want the collector status here, you must be ready to totally comply with ALL the storage regs.

If you want collector status be ready to jump through hoops. Keep in mind "collectors" don't always get ATT's for their collections. Save your self the hassle and remain a "target shooter".
